at the age of 9 our household became a 1 parent family, with my dad being the parent...we quickly learned if we wanted lunch, we made it, we wanted breakfast, we made it, we wanted clean clothes, we washed our own...we had a sports practice, we rode our bikes to it and he would pick us up if we finished near dark, otherwise, bike back home as well (yeah, I know, different times).

My p's lived by this. They thought my schoolwork and activities were too important for me to have a job. Why bag groceries at the Stop n Shop if I could be practicing the piano?

Reading all of these comments makes me so glad to know I'm not the only parent that actually expects my kids to do work around the house without promise of a set payment.

We do reward our kids monetarily when they do extra things. But I'll be darned if they don't grow up understanding that to live in a clean house, with clean clothes and food to eat means everyone helps out. I am not your maid, your chef or your housekeeper!

I wouldn't dare do this. He would stop cooking and I would be very hungry.
