When you perform an internal audit do you require written procedures for the department you are auditing? Such as Dormant Accounts, Wire Transfers, etc.

No. To me written procedures are a guideline for the individual performing the task. Besides procedures could change on a periodic basis, thus trying to perform testwork back to the original procedures is tough.

Yes. You should be auditing back to policy or procedure.

Are you telling me that you do not have written procedures on how to process a wire?

Can't speak for the original poster, but I audit to our Wire Policy.

Same here...our policies have few controls in them, they are focused on WHAT we are doing. The procedures are HOW we do it and contain specific controls.

Not all areas have written procedures, but the majority do now. I spent the first several years auditing with "create formal written procedures documenting controls" as a recommendation.

Yes, Jocawest, there are not written procedures on how to process a wire. So each time I perform an audit, I have to ask and write them down. Just curious if most auditors require written procedures.

Our policies address what we will do. They are not specific as to how.
