We are having a discussion on a subject I thought was well settled. The question is: can you require a special deposit slip for and US Treasury Check in order to obtain next day availability if the check is deposited in person to an account held by at least one payee of the bank?

No. The purpose of a special deposit slip is to identify a next-day check that cannot be identified by its Routing Number in the MICR line. Examples are cashier's, tellers, and certified checks and checks on local government units.

U.S. Treasury checks carry unique routing numbers, as do checks on the Federal Reserve Banks and Federal Home Loan Banks, and U.S. Postal Service Postal Money Orders. Checks in this group can be recognized by your systems as next-day availability items; therefore, you cannot require the use of a special deposit slip as a prerequisite to treating the checks as next-day items.
