What do you call branch referrals of suspicious activity at your bank? We've called these "Internal SAR" for years. Recently, someone told me they felt this could be a risk because the employee could tell a customer they filed a "SAR" on them. I see the point, but I'm not certain I agree. We clearly communicate to employees on a regular basis that SARs are not to be disclosed to the customer. I'm considering this change but thought I'd take a poll. Thanks.

How about just calling them suspicious activity referrals and do not use the acronym? Or simply suspicious activity escalations.

We call ours 'BSA Incident Reports' but I hear the branches all the time telling me they sent me a 'SAR'. I cringe a little when I hear it, but so far I have not made it an issue. I always use the correct terminology when discussing it.

We call ours "Suspicious Activity Logs" or SAL and explain in training that a log doesn't mean a SAR will be filed.

We call ours "Questionable Activity Reports".

Staff are trained as to what information is required and we reinforce that they are NOT filing a SAR, that a SAR may or may not be filed, that they will never know the outcome, and that none of this should be discussed with any customer.

You are here
anything but an acronym that uses the letters SAR I believe that JPM had an issue with that during the Madoff case.

We call them Activity Alert - I did not like the referrals being called SARs.

We call them Employee Suspicious Activity Report. I like Unusual Activity Report and I may just copy that.

The Bank I used to work for called them ISARs for Internal Suspicious Activity Reports.
The Bank I am now working at calls them FINs for Further Investigation Needed. I tend to like the term FIN better for the same reasons listed above.
