I remember .55 a gallon in the 80s.

You could also buy a car for $5,000 or less too!

So Cal
A new gas tax went into effect on the first in California, but nobody seems to know how much it will be. After Googling it a bit, speculation has it increasing the cost per gallon anywhere from 10 cents to $1.30. Way to go California legislature, since you accomplish so much with all of the money you already extract from us. mad

It looks like it hasn't kicked in yet, so I better fill up and at least save a little before this new gouge takes effect. State tax on gas is already around $.56/gallon.

On the way home from son's house north of Little Rock, bought gas in Greenville, Texas for $1.83/gallon.

I'm old. I remember gas wars and seeing .17/gallon gas when I was a kid and regular was .28 when I first began driving. Real premium was .32 and it was the good 100 octane stuff that smelled so good as it was going in the tank.

Saturday, I bought gas for $1.92. I was so excited to get gas under $2 that I took a picture of the sign and put it on facebook. Then I took my wife's car and filled it up, too.

Yesterday, gas was $1.89. I feel cheated.

Some stations must have changed their prices at 12:01 a.m. on Jan 1st. I filled up on 12/31 @ $2.55 - the next day it was $2.65.

Gasoline here bumped up from $2.08 per gallon to $2.19 per gallon - with the exception of Kroger. It is now $2.05 city-wide.

And at lunch they had gone back up to $2.19. Totally weird - and very frustrating.

If they keep raising gas taxes I say we dump all the gas in the Boston harbor as a reminder ^_-

Companies here in town are already letting employees go and cutting hours. That's what happens when you live in oil and gas country. Bring on all the delinquent loans from people who can't pay! Yea!!!

It's fixing to get nasty around here. Well sites prepped a month ago have been abandoned already.

And US Steel has announced 750+ layoffs this morning.

Sorry for the individual losses of employment but I have a very hard time feeling sorry for the industry as a whole as the rest of us were suffering while they were recording record profits the past few years.

The same thing is happening here in coal country. A large company announced several hundred lay-offs just before Christmas. We had a windmill plant that was supposed to save the planet, that also closed recently. Not sure what went wrong there. Perhaps they ran-out of the lolli-pops and rainbows that they were using to power-it.

If only I could harness the transportation abilities of using Unicorns instead of the automobile. I do believe that the fight with PETA (and the Mayor of NYC)would be worth it.

It all depends on where you live. The economy of our town thrives on the oil and gas industry. When it is bad all businesses hurt also. We are a rural area where it's either oil and gas or farming. And the farming wasn't great this last year either. I had 4 quarters of wheat that had to be put to hay because it wasn't tall enough to harvest. The combine headers would have had to scrape the ground to get anything at all and that would just mount up in equipment repairs. So everything spent in fertilizer, etc. ended up in almost no profit. Guess I better try to keep my day job a little longer.

I filled up for $1.92 a gallon last night... we figure we are saving around $200 a month from it's high a few months ago.

I think it has been a good 15 years since I recall it being at this price point.

Regular here is $1.99. Diesel has fallen all the way to $2.79, about a $1 per gallon cheaper then it was a month ago.
