My city population is about 230,000 and area size about 120 square miles. I can get to just about anywhere I need to go by bicycle.....and do, occasionally. But no......I like my car.

I tend not to join in the cooler, but I wanted to add that my daughter lives in NYC and has for 10+ years. She loves to drive but does not have nor does she want or need a car in the city. If she is going somewhere fairly local and wants to use a car she will get a Zip car. If she is going further afield, she will use a traditional car rental. For her everyday needs, she uses trains, buses and taxis and loves it. No insurance, no upkeep, no parking hassles.

Because she doesn't have the hassle of the car. She really prefers big cities!

I have a friend who is super "green" doesn't own a car....rides her bicycle everywhere. Doesn't have furniture in her apartment either. I could actually take a bus wherever I want to go here....and not to be judgmental, but here, you can see some pretty strange people riding it. It's just not the norm here.

My daughter lives in the Bronx, and she just bought a minivan this week. Baby #3 on the way and when fireman hubby is working, she needs a vehicle at home. She has used a bike with a baby seat to take the first baby to the sitter a mile away, a taxi to rush the 2nd to the ER, and buses to get one of the boys to his karate classes. She has been 8 years without a personal vehicle, but this mom feels a whole lot better knowing she has access to one all the time.
For her professional life, she uses the bus, train, subway, taxis and private drivers.

I can understand not wanting a car for the hassles but there is no way anyone can love the NYC subway, commuter rail, or the smell of the taxi cabs.

I love the NYC subway...then again, I only use it when on vacation and only for a week at a time...have not experienced the commuter rail in NYC (but in Chicago and Atlanta it is rather scary)...and the taxi service leaves a lot to be desired...

And of course, people who live in the City walk alot. My daughter is always nagging me about that, when I want a taxi.

When my husband and I were in NY a few years ago we used the subway and taxi - and walked a bunch. I always enjoyed walking and in some instances was much easier to get around.

Needless to say I would walk 2 miles to work every morning rather than take the subway.

Unfortunately due to the amount of tourist (it is not a good idea to stop in the middle of a busy street to take a call or stop randomly gaze up whilst others are trying to get home) on the way home the subway is the only way to get around.

And that circles back to other discussions of why New Yorkers avoid Times Square! A primary reason is the clogged sidewalks/streets. Nightmare!

4 vehicles...3 drivers. Personal vehicles are a must when you live 20 minutes (by car) from everything. Ah, but the peace and quiet is worth the drive. smile

Popular Mechanics 1966:

What will cars be like in 2016? The Automobile Club of Michigan, this year celebrating its 50th anniversary, wondered about this recently and approached widely publicized seer Jeane Dixon, asked her to gaze into her crystal ball and come up with a few answers. Fifty years from now, Miss Dixon predicted, cars will flit back and forth on cushions of air, the wheels retracting upon starting. They will be fueled by some exotic new compound yet to be developed; gasoline as we know it will have gone the way of the buggy whip. A radar-like device will guard against cars being involved in accidents. Consensus here is that Miss Dixon is on fairly safe ground as "studies" of such designs and gadgetry are already in the works, although a long, long way from fruition.

Popular Mechanics probably should have asked engineers instead of Ms. Dixon. But we do have radar like devices to guard against collision on some cars, so she got that part right.
