Does anyone give a paid day off for an employee's birthday?

We do - for now. Our bank was sold in December to another holding company so we're probably going to lose that.

One of my employers did, but you could take it any day you wished. Failing to take it did not "carry over" to the next year.

We give the afternoon of your birthday off. So you get to eat cake in the morning with your co-workers and do whatever you want with your afternoon. Most of the time it is the day of your birthday however it has supervisor approval to move it if needed. It used to be for just non-exempt staff; exempt staff were added this year.

Happy Birthday Compliant Okie

Ours is a 'set' day. You actually get your birthday off on that date. If it's on a weekend you get Monday off. If it's on a holiday (i.e. Veteran's Day) you get the next business day off. Makes it easier for scheduling purposes.

Thanks for all the input. I had thought that only allowing the day off on your birthday or the following business day would be the best option for scheduling purposes. I also like just having the afternoon off idea. We haven't talked about doing this yet but I wanted to get some ideas on how others handle it.

We're not voting, but I like the afternoon off, "use it or lose it" approach. Hmmm, but how would that work for those employees who honestly believe they are indispensable to the bank's daily operations? wink

Ken - I've determined that those who think they are indispensable are the ones the other employees wish would take off more often... crazy

Hmmm, did you ever work in a $12 million bank in Indiana? If so, this will sound very familiar.

Employee going on vacation: Don't worry about balancing the Credit Life and A & H accounts while I'm on vacation; it would just be too hard for anyone else to figure out.

Cashier: No doubt. Enjoy your vacation.

Cashier to the new kid as he dumps all the files on his desk: Figure it out. I don't care how long it takes you, just figure it out. She's been the only person who could do this for the 10 years I've been here and I'm tired of hearing about how indispensable she is.

New Kid, two hours later: It's done and, honestly, it's not that hard. However, it could be done in 30 minutes if the statement cycle was set for month end.

Cashier: Do it.

Employee returning from vacation: Oh, I've been dreading working on the Credit Life & A & H accounts for the last two weeks. I'm going to put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door and I will try to have them done by this afternoon.

Cashier, without looking up: They're already done. Beth is going to do them from now on and you can take over a couple things from her.

The previous bank I worked for we got a birthday day off. Had to be used either month before, month of or month after our birthday. But when they switched to PTO the day was just added into that. Truly, I believe we lost it.

We also switched to PTO so it doesn't really matter, "it's in there". As a side note, I have never worked on my birthday my entire
illustrious working career. uh 38yrs but I am not aging myself. Your day of birth is the one day you get to celebrate yourself and Thank your Mother and Father. smile

Peach - you reminded me of my 40th birthday. I gave my parents a present. My younger brother colorized my newborn picture (yes - back in the day they were black and white) and I wrote a poem and had it framed. Mom still has it out.

We have it here and everyone loves it. Seems like there's not a huge cost to the bank in one lost day but it's a big boost for morale, at least here!
