Way, way south.

This year’s batch of Silicon Valley summer interns might earn more money than you.

The median monthly base salary for an engineering-focused summer intern at some of the big technology companies is $6,800. Annualized, that's $81,600 a year, according to data collected by Rodney Folz, a former University of California Berkeley student and soon-to-be Yelp intern. The national wage index is $46,481.52, according to data last compiled by the Social Security Administration in 2014.

Very impressive for an intern, but the wow factor is reduced when you consider (I'm guessing) the cost of living in the Silicon Valley or surrounding areas.

I'd be interested to hear some of our Cali bankers give us the average wage for a teller in San Francisco.

Cost of living over there is horrible. I had to turn down a job at Sega as even with the increased Pay fo the job the increased cost of living would tank me financially. Their HR person noted many of the staff share housing. No thank you.

One of the few good things about living in Idaho is the cost of living is basically nothing.

right up there with the pay, no? grin

have a nephew in SF, he has 3 roommates so they can afford something other than a broom closet...of course, he also chooses to live in one of the most expensive areas of town...

I read a story about a young man working at Google that had converted a small box truck into a mobile apartment and was living in the parking lot at work. They had many of the missing amenities (bathrooms, showers, cafeteria, etc) at work so he was pretty well set.

I make well above the national household average. So factoring in my cost of living, I probably have higher disposable income than most. Plus I'm single, so that helps a lot too...

Try having 6 daughters and 1 (admittedly with a salary WELL ABOVE the index) working parent...I'm making about 5 times what I was when I started in Banking 23 years ago, and I'm still poor, but with a nicer car and house...:-)

I would not survive 6 kids.

It's difficult to compare salaries in California with other locations.

And that's the reason a nation wide minimum wage is so ridiculous. $15 where I live would be solid lower middle class, but in SF or NYC it's probably still a poverty wage.

Isn't that why most states have their own minimum wages?

My wife's roommate when we got married, was transferred from Ohio to Pasadena when her company closed their Dublin Ohio location. They were tripling her salary, so she thought WooHoo!. When she finally settled into her new place (Which was smaller then her Dublin Apt) she ended up having a pay cut. eek

many moons ago when I worked at FRB, it you took a job in DC, NYC, or CA (assuming you weren't already living in one of these locations), you received a 30-50% "pay adjustment" on top of whatever increase you were given. No idea if still in play, but also know from a couple of folks that moved that it was at best a wash, but more likely a decrease due to housing costs.

And that's the way it should be. If a $15 national minimum wage were enacted, a la Bernie Sanders, most small businesses around here would be bankrupt in a week.
