The bank has been presented with a death certificate from Coahuila De Zaragoza, Mexico for a deposit account holder. What, if any, verification steps should be performed to ensure the authenticity of this document? I would appreciate your thoughts.

It is going to be pretty difficult to validate. Who is presenting it and how much money is involved?

This should work. Most "Registro Civil" in Mexico have searchable information. They even have little bending machines in some cities where you can get your birth certificate.
