My Mother had what she and the doctor thought was a cyst removed from her arm a few weeks ago. It turned out that it was a rare form of skin cancer. She is going in today to have some of the surrounding tissue removed and checked. She will also be undergoing some radiation as the small mass they removed was half a centimeter past where they don't need to do radiation treatment. She is very healthy for an 84 year old woman, but this has been causing her a great deal of stress as she has had very few health issues in the past. Prayers and good thoughts would be appreciated.

Apparently the dye that they were going to use during the procedure would not disperse properly and they are referring her to another doctor. No surgery today, but follow up with a new doctor.

Her referral will be to a doctor in Pittsburgh which is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from here. Neither my mother or father is able to drive that far and in city traffic so I will be the official driver. She is very anxious because, even though there is no indication that the cancer has spread yet, she feels it's taking too long to get this resolved and is concerned about waiting much longer. I can understand that, I hope they can get her in soon.

Just now reading this, Thomas. Prayers for your mother, your father - and the entire family.

Prayers for your Mom that all is well and her anxiety is lifted, and patience for you as you drive to the big city with them.

Upon making the referral, the doctor in Pittsburgh actually told the local doctor which tests to order (locally) to avoid having her go all of that way. If the test results are favorable, the only other treatment will be an in office surgery to excise the skin tissue around where the cancer was to make sure it has not spread and possibly some radiation which can also be done locally.

We are all hoping for the best as this cancer (Merkel Cell Carcinoma) is very rare and aggressive.

Mom goes in for an MRI today to check her lymph nodes. If her MRI is clear, they will do minor surgery in two weeks on her arm (where the skin cancer was removed) to make sure the surrounding tissue is cancer free.
