We recently had a request to issue a debit card to an 8 year old. Our bank policy doesn't state a specific minimum age to be able to obtain a debit card and our state law doesn't prohibit it, but it doesn't seem like a good banking practice to let an 8 year old have one.

Also, we don't open accounts for minors without a parent or guardian as co-owner.

I don't think your card issuer will allow you to issue the card to a minor in the first place. VISA even limits authorized users of prepaid cards to no younger than 13.

Our bank does not issue debit cards to minors.

We issue debit cards to minors who are old enough to have a driver's license (in our state it is 16 years of age) and are joint signors with their guardian on the checking account.
