We lost our black lab Sitka Tuesday night, very unexpectedly... and at 1 month shy of turning 6. He was the best, happiest, loving, most well behaved, gentle dog there ever was. Our home and our hearts are unbelievably empty.

To add to the story, we lost my father in law earlier this year. He and Sitka were big time pals. So, when we heard the awful diagnosis - I turned to my husband and said (through gushing tears) "well, I guess your dad needs him more than we do." I take great comfort knowing they are up there playing with a frisbee and he is getting his ears scratched.

Pets are family members, there is no doubt and when one passes the hurt is just as deep. I am sure you were the best of pet parents. That should give you great comfort knowing you gave your dog a wonderful, warm, loving home. A pet can't ask for more. And, now, he is with his best buddy!

I think the story about your dad needing him more was so sweet. So sorry for the loss of your furbaby.

Yesterday, we brought home a 9 week old female Bernewfie (St Bernard/Newfoundland). I am really hoping she takes after mom, who was only 110 lbs. If not, dad was 170! We could be in for a world of trouble :-)

Wow! Either one of those weights is quite sizable. Best of luck - and have you come up with a name?

Yes! Our lab was only 80 lbs, so it will be a bigger dog. My husband has always wanted a Newfoundland, and this puppy was a sister to a puppy a friend just got. Our original intention was to wait a little longer, but this fell in our laps and we couldn't resist.

Her name is Eagan. My husband lived in Sitka, AK when he was in the Coast Guard - and years ago, I lived in Eagan, MN. She had 4 names before we finally settled on that one (Kodiak, Denali, Galena and Ezzi).

She is all black with a white patch on her chest and all 4 paws are white with black speckles.

WE HAD A SAINT! Wonderful dogs. - "Brandi" was a rough-coat (longer hair) and got up to 150 pounds. Gentle with kids, my daughter at age 2 would walk her, while I walked a 1 year old German Shorthair. Neighbors all laughed.

Only issue - they are somewhat large, and their food and water bowls need to be. After ours had a healthy drink, she would always come over to where you were sitting, and put her (drooly) head in your lap. Also, if you have a Christmas tree - remove all ornaments below 4 feet. If not, her tail will do it for you.

Thought I would provide an update. Just a couple of days after my last post... she was renamed to Denali. Eagan just wasn't fitting and we went back to an Alaskan theme for the new name.

This dog is WAY different than our lab. She is a diva and she just might have ADHD. She is large and in charge. She also thinks... that at 4 months old and 45 lbs... she is a lap dog. When we scold her, she definitely turns back and give you a look like she is telling us where we can stick it.

Like our 1 1/2 year old grandson, the word she hears the most is "NO!"... or don't touch... or drop that... or come... or....

We are worn out.... she is lucky she is cute

She's almost old enough for training classes which will help a lot I'm sure. My 10 mo old just finished level one and is quite different than she was 6 weeks ago when the class started. We're on to Level 2 this week.
Denali's still all puppy tho and big dogs mature slower than little ones so lots of 'no' left to come. wink
My littlest grangirl has a Newfie who's now 9 and totally devoted to her. Once he got past a year or so, the calm sweet Newfie temperament came out in spades. I have the sweetest pictures of this toddler walking 100+ lbs of black furry love.
Hang in there, while totally different from a Lab, I'm sure by this time next year, Denali will be a wonderful dog.

I'm convinced that puppies are terrible twos from birth until they reach about 3 years old. I think classes would be great but we live too far away from any city for training classes so we bungle along on our own.

We now have a young rescued border collie that is so sensitive that we have to be most gentle when scolding her. She will hug and kiss on you and crawl in your lap all day after a scolding to make sure you two are buddies again.

We also have a Jack Russell that, like cats, don't care what you want or think unless it aligns with her own thinking.

No two are alike! Good luck and keep us posted. We love our dog stores here on BOL.

This.^^^ And don't forget to get her outside as much as possible for lots and lots of run and play time. A tired puppy is a happy (and well-behaved) puppy! We are fortunate that our location allows us a doggy door and large fenced backyard, so the girls can entertain themselves without having to resort to home destruction. Enjoy!

Yes! We have 8 acres, so both mama and puppy go out for long walks for needed exercise. Except for the last week, because she got fixed. Vet said to keep her calm for 10 days and no walks.

HA!!!!!

There is absolutely no way to keep a puppy 'quiet' for even 2 days - let alone 10.

My heeler got her leg crushed in the growth plates when she was a teeny weenie thing by a horse that stomped her [cat life #1]...keep her dry and calm they said...yeah RIGHT, I said.

Wasn't long before the hard cast had no choice but to be taken off for the final time because the vet refused to put another one on because she refused to stay dry...so my son and I fashioned a copper splint which we wrapped in vet wrap that could be more easily changed out...since it was apparent she would NOT stay out of water. And try to crate a heeler pup and keep them calm...no freaking way. eek
