The start of the new year make me reflect on old Base ball players and Hall of fame voting

As some may have guessed I am not a Boston red sox fan.

But how in the world does Trever Hoffman receive more HOF ballots than Curt Shillings or Roger Clement?

Both Shilling and Clemens had controversies in their careers. Hoffman didn't.

Schilling - too right-wing (which shouldn't hurt him, but probably does)
Clemens - steroids

The baseball HOF is a popularity contest. Most steroid area players will probably have a tough time making it in.

Schilling has no on field controversies such as steroids, etc. He has had his share of post baseball issues (failed business with RI taxpayers taking a hit, controversial comments and political leanings). He should be judged on his baseball achievements, not his personal life or beliefs. That goes for any player.

I agree TB12

As for Clemens he was cleared of all charges relating to lying to congress about his alleged steroid use. (so not guilty)

Commissioner Bud Selig who presided over MLB during steroid era is in.

I was listening to one of the baseball writers trying to explain why he isn't voting for Schilling this year, even though he voted for him previously.

He heard that Schilling at one point had a WWII memorabilia collection that included German and Nazi stuff. Schilling has since donated the collection to a museum, but this guy compared this to Marge Schott, who had German memorabilia and said at one point that Hitler wasn't so bad early on.

These guys either have the stats or they don't. These voters take themselves way to seriously.

I'm a believer that only the great players should get into the Hall. Bagwell and Raines were both good, but not great, in my opinion. I also don't understand how these guys get more and more votes each year. You either are worthy or you're not worthy. They don't get more worthy each year. As for the steroid guys, there is just too much unknown. You keep out Bonds and Clemens because of steroids, but for all anyone knows, they were all using. Plus Bud Selig is getting in the Hall. You can elect a guy that benefitted tremendously from steroid use, and not elect the players.

Pete Rose will never be in the hall of fame. He's got the most hits in MLB history, but he'll never be in due to his lifetime suspension for gambling on games. I'm guessing writers are going to do the same with Bonds and Clemens for steriods. Schilling, they just don't like is off the field views. It's a good thing the hall of fame isn't based on the on field accomplishments.

Than why did two of the three (steroid users) this year make it in?

Pete Rose also played on the winning team in more games than anyone else in major league history. But he'll never be in the hall of fame.

Since Commish Bud got in, I can all but promise you that Bonds and Clemens will get in a year or two. There vote counts have climbed significantly since last year and that's usually a sign of pending enshrinement. Arod will also eventually be enshrined.

Regarding Bagwell, Raines and Pudge. All were great players and IMO, deserve to be in (Is Raines Ricky Henderson? No, but I would opine that he is a top 5 lead off hitter of all time. Similar arguments could be made for Bagwell and Pudge).

You think Bagwell was a top 5 first-baseman/clean-up hitter of all time? I'm just saying that if these guys were truly 'great' players, they would have gotten in on their first try. And to me, that's who should be in the Hall. But I'm well aware of the fact that there are many good, not necessarily great players in.

Tim Raines admitted keeping a gram of coke in his uniform pocket (as well as revealing that he snorted during games), and that he only slid into bases headfirst so as not to break the vial.[4]
