It's really not the 'so' in front of a question, like you are questioning the other party...it's when the party of the first part asks a question and the party of the second part begins with 'so' and then dives into an elaborate and lengthy scientific or political answer. smirk

A bit off topic, but...

If I ever say "So..." my coworker comes back with "Sew buttons on a rubber duck." And for "Well..." he says "Deep subject, turn it on its side and it's a tunnel."

He got them from someone else that used to work here. NO idea where these phrases came from, but it does make me realize how often I START a question/subject with "Soooo..." :P

With "So...", I quote Breakfast Club: "SO, are you guys, like, boyfriend and girlfriend?"

While not exactly the same - one of my pet peeves is when someone responds 'no problem' instead of 'you're welcome' when you thank them. Yes, I'm older than most of you, but it's just not the same.

<<<---guilty. Actually, I'm bad to say 'not a problem'. And it really depends on the situation and circumstances.

I here it sometimes around here. It's definitely more of a country/northwoods phrase though.

As for the you're welcome vs no problem debate, something interesting I saw recently was phrased similarly to this:

‘No problem’, coming from a millennial’s mouth, within the context of helping someone – whether it be holding a door open/picking up something someone may have dropped/etc. – and, naturally, being thanked for it, implies that the kind gesture was indeed, not a problem, that it was just the thing to do, that they were happy to help and that no thanks was really necessary.

While a Baby Boomer’s ‘You’re welcome’ in contrast, says something miles different, it actually highlights the fact that the person went out of their way to help someone; almost brings attention to it in a way, saying 'Yeah, I helped you, I did you this favor I accept your thanks.’ which, malicious intent or not, is strikingly different than the millennial downplay of their act of kindness for the sake of helping someone.

I've found that lately I often just say 'Yep' when someone thanks me for something insignificant like holding a door, which probably angers both sides of the argument. I should work on that.
