Are exempt employees required to use PTO for partial days off? Example 1/2 day off for dentist appointment.

To me this would be how it is defined in your Employee Handbook/Policy.

I can tell you what our policy is but it will not do you any good since you do not have a policy regarding this issue. We use a PTO plan and employees have the ability to take off based on the number of hours in their PTO bank. In your example, no we do not require any employee to take time off in half day blocks.

Pulling people out of the ditc...
my opinion only, and how I enforce with the exempts that report to me...if you show up to work and then need to leave for appointment or because ill, I don't require you to use PTO...you were at work. some in our company agree with this process, others don't, and require them to log time.

none of my exempts work a straight 40 anyway, all are over, and some are way over, 40 hours.

but as already said, follow your HR rules, and if one not in place, create one that you consistently follow.
