Customer came to drive up window and handed teller a check payable to the customer with a completed deposit slip.
Customer then drove off before any conversation with the teller. We do not want to deposit the check (we know it will not pay).
The phone numbers on our system and check are not good numbers.
What can we do?

Return the deposit. Doesn't your depositor's agreement include something like this: We may accept, accept for collection only, refuse, or return all or part of any deposit.

In addition to returning the deposit, you may want to reevaluate whether or not this customer is worth keeping. The way you describe this event, it sounds like the customer was knowingly trying to force a bad check into his account.
