I openly admit that using BOL has enhanced my vocabulary.

Thought it might be fun to have a spot where people can share words that are new to them or words they have seen cleverly used in a BOL post or otherwise.

Might be helpful to include a definition or the word used in a sentence.

For example, plethora

Jefe: We have many beautiful piñatas for your birthday celebration, each one filled with little surprises!
El Guapo: How many piñatas?
Jefe: Many piñatas, many!
El Guapo: Jefe, would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?
Jefe: A what?
El Guapo: A plethora.
Jefe: Oh yes, El Guapo. You have a plethora.
El Guapo: Jefe, what is a plethora?
Jefe: Why, El Guapo?
El Guapo: Well, you just told me that I had a plethora, and I would just like to know if you know what it means to have a plethora. I would not like to think that someone would tell someone else he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.
Jefe: El Guapo, I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education, but could it be that once again, you are angry at something else, and are looking to take it out on me?

Dusty Bottoms: What does that mean, in-famous?

Ned Nederlander: Oh, Dusty. In-famous is when you're MORE than famous. This man El Guapo, he's not just famous, he's IN-famous.

Lucky Day: 100,000 pesos to perform with this El Guapo, who's probably the biggest actor to come out of Mexico!

Dusty Bottoms: Wow, in-famous? In-famous?

"Invalid" is an interesting word. If the accent is antepenultimate, it has one meaning. If the accent is penultimate, it has another meaning completely.

Obfuscate
- render obscure, unclear, or unintelligible.

The more and more I study this regulation, the more I am convinced the powers that be are trying to obfuscate the purpose of the regulation.

Found this a while back when reading the ABA Whitepaper on HMDA. I love the way it is used because of the double entendre:

"While the addition of new data points may provide a more fulsome picture of the mortgage markets,...."

Fulsome - as an adjective has the following meanings:

1.offensive to good taste, especially as being excessive; overdone or gross:
fulsome praise that embarrassed her deeply; fulsome décor.

2.disgusting; sickening; repulsive:
a table heaped with fulsome mounds of greasy foods.

3.excessively or insincerely lavish:
fulsome admiration.

4.encompassing all aspects; comprehensive:
a fulsome survey of the political situation in Central America.

5.abundant or copious.

Of particular glee to me is how the meaning that will likely be read in is #5, however the first definition is, imho, so much more appropriate.

Dingus

Used to refer to something whose name the speaker cannot remember, is unsure of, or is humorously or euphemistically omitting.
"here's a doohickey—and there's the dingus"

I've always used this incorrectly. I use this word to when I am talking about someone who did something stupid.

Confusticate=Dictionary.com word of the day.

1. Slang. to confuse or perplex; bewilder.

If someone had used this word on me I would think they were inventing words.

We are studying Psalms in our Sunday School class. One type of Psalm is called an "imprecatory" psalm - one that calls for God's righteous judgement on the wicked. Psalm 69 is an imprecatory psalm.

Actually, tastes more like beef. Didn't know until after I had eaten it. Happened when I was in the Army stationed in S. Korea.

Just started drafting an audit report with the head of a department so that she and I can talk about some of the surprising findings.

I think I am going to share this new vocabulary word with her this morning. Imprecatory.
