Waldensouth, you will still experience the effect of it..........darkness in the middle of the day. HappyG....this is an absolutely phenomenal occurrence. The media coverage is due to the unbelievable influx of people to the path of totality. It's crazy. The news coverage is definitely a refreshing change from otherwise continual depressing news.

You are here
Is this something like when a big rain cloud covers the sun and it gets dark, without the rain part?

LOL Um.....I don't think it's quite that subtle.

However, we HAVE had storms move in where the clouds are so thick that it seems like dusk in the middle of the day.....but not full-fledged nighttime.

Will it be dark enough to make the streetlights come on?

Sorry - too much info in clipboard!

Ed - from Space.com

When the Aug. 21, 2017, total solar eclipse descends on the U.S., skywatchers will be plunged into twilight at midday and will witness twisting streamers of light emanating from the edges of the obscured sun. While these features tend to dominate most people's total eclipse experience, there is much more to see if you know what to look for.

A total solar eclipse changes the very air around you; the loss of sunlight can cause the temperature to drop 10 or more degrees. The change in lighting also makes shadows look sharper on the ground, so it's possible to see individual hairs on your head in your shadow. During a total solar eclipse, skywatchers might see stars become visible in the daytime or perhaps catch a glimpse of the planet Mercury, which is difficult to see on a normal day because of how close it orbits to the sun.

The Aug. 21, 2017, total solar eclipse will be visible only inside the "path of totality," which stretches from Oregon to South Carolina. Totality (the period when the sun is completely obscured) will last for, at most, 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

DEL - I would think streetlights would only come on if they use sensors and ones that are pretty sensitive at that?

Apparently, there have been several people asking what Idaho's laws are regarding animal sacrifices... It's going to be a strange weekend.

I just popped out the back door with my eclipse glasses on. The moon is just covering a piece of the sun now.

Same here, Freak. I really expected it to be much darker, but it did change enough that that automatic lights on the outside of the building came on. It definitely cooled down, especially in the sun.

Sure am glad I didn't drive hundreds of miles or spend any money on eclipse glasses. Especially since in just 7 short years, there will be another one with totality over TX.

The peak just passed here. It was very cool to see. All the street lights came on. And it was very quiet.

Well our peak time has passed. didn't get totally dark, but definitely darker. We were in the 99.7% range.

I didn't get to go to Greenville. frown As Walden said, same here - 99% and it did get darker, but surprisingly not close to what those in totality experienced. It also did get surprisingly cooler. Light was more like a filtered light.

We just passed peak here - but only about 59% was eclipsed, so it didn't get darker or cooler at all. Still awesome to see though!

The cloud cover was thin. So when the clouds covered, I stole a glance with sunglasses. Every now and then, it would peek through the clouds and so I used my solar shades (NASA approved......). Then looked at it over my shoulder with phone in selfie mode. No....this did not ruin my phone.

East Ky. We were around 95% coverage. Could barely tell it got any darker....maybe compared to the earliest onset of dusk. Couldn't tell it had gotten any cooler.
