So Cal
I can imagine the lawyers assembling now.

This Glad Lawn Bag (hereafter known as "GLB") may, but is not guaranteed to, adequately protect you when viewing a solar eclipse. You hereby waive any right or expectation of future eye health and performance due to the use of a GLB for any purpose other than the collection of yard waste. You agree that any bag is not a toy. You also agree to pierce such GLB as needed in order to provide respiration as necessary and that any such piercing shall not be used to view any solar eclipse directly. Said piercing may reduce the functionality of the GLB's primary purpose, that purpose being a GLB. You agree to hold Glad harmless for ridicule that you may receive (e.g. being called a "dork" or "dweeb") for using the GLB for non-GLB purposes. You hereby waive your right to trial by jury because nobody wants to see 12 people that could be considered your "peers" gather in one place.

I'm a little embarrassed to confess that this topic may have, allegedly, pulled me away from my real estate audit for about 3 hours.

I just bought a 20 pack of eclipse viewing glasses for $12. Not a cheap as a Glad bag, but less risk of suffocation.

It's OK; it has pulled me away from the Word Association thread, too

We're looking forward to the eclipse in Columbia, SC. Ours will be 2 seconds less than Carbondale.

BH Photovideo had several articles about shooting the eclipse, and did a test with several cameras to determine what the danger was to equipment. Most digital cameras should not have an issue with the eclipse, but in some older film cameras, the film, or cloth shutters could easily burn.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/out...asked-questions

Guitar - better than the garbage bags, get a few bags of PoppyCock, and same the mylar bags on the inside. They at least offer protection from the ultraviolet light. (That is also what the cheaper lens filters will be using.)

silly me, thinking bankers were intelligent... crazy

you cut a swatch about 6" x 6" and hold in front of your face and view through it, you do not place your entire head inside the bag...

I've heard that using a kids magnifying glass works great. The ones you used to burn ants with.

Just put it right up to your eye.

This whole "migration" thing fascinates me. We're driving with friends we like a lot and any excuse for a road trip is good, but we're going to be on the road for two and a half hours so it will be dark about 3 seconds longer? Can I just close my eyes instead? Now I know what Richard Dreyfus felt like driving to Devil's Butte.

And as for "watching" it, er, what is it people think they're going to see? Here's a You Tube Video complete with some Brit blathering away about somebody's beads.

My sister is a science teacher just one town away from Carbondale which is truly just a tiny town. The crowd expectations run from 50k to 100s and Carbondale has no idea how to handle it. Sis said glasses are sold out. Illinois schools are back in session before the eclipse so she and all her fellow science teachers are working up huge lesson plans around it.
Funny thing is that Carbondale is also the epicenter for the next eclipse even tho it's running in the opposite direction.

I'm sure Carbondale will manage it with all the skill and attention to public safety as they do with the annual Halloween Riot, I mean Party.

Assuming we have good weather that day, we are right in the middle of the path of the eclipse, in Grand Island, NE.

For those in the St. Louis area, Schlafly Brewing is inserting a pair of eclipse viewing glasses in each 12 bottle pack of their Helles Lager.

I am taking that day off and will be able to watch it with my husband. We're just west of Nashville, TN so the viewing should be decent - weather permitting.

We are considering closing several of our branches that are in 100% coverage zones. Sheriffs have said not to expect timely responses from emergency services since the population will more than double that day. Also, they said any open business will essentially be a public restroom.

I'm planning to be in Charleston, SC with my daughter and her family. If weather is not forecast good there, will shift to Greenville, SC with my other daughter and her family.

I'm 59 years old and this will be the first total eclipse of the sun I've witnessed. Praying for clear weather in one of those two locations.

My daughter just moved to Salisbury, North Carolina. I think I'll just stay put here in North Texas. I am only .8 magnitude away......

Unknowingly, I booked a cruise that is sailing during the eclipse. The sail route was modified and I'm thinking they will head out to the eclipse zone. I purchased cheap glasses for us to view.

This will be interesting; viewing a total eclipse in the Bermuda triangle.
