Wow, it was amazing!! The difference between even 99% and full totality is enormous. We traveled to Idaho to see totality, and to see the crescent slip into a full blown halo really was something I'll remember and marvel over the rest of my life. Up to that point, it was just neat, not magnificent.

It got eerie dark (street lights and business lights came on), and quite cold. We saw other planets (including Mercury, usually hidden by the sun), and were truly awestruck by the sun's corona. As the sun started to peek back out, we saw a "diamond ring" -- the circle of light with a point of brilliant radiance, like the profile of a wedding ring. THEN we were treated to "shadow snakes" on the sidewalk. This is a rare phenomenon right before and after totality, when mysterious undulating, waving streams of shadows are visible on light colored surfaces, looking like they are being blown by celestial wind. They still baffle scientists. Sooooo cool.

Before totality, it was neat to see the cookie-bite out of the orange sun, but it was nothing compared to the white corona halo. No joke... If you have the chance to ever see it in totality, do it. It is worth it. You'll have the opportunity in 2024, or see it with your grandkids in 2045. Check out this map! North American 21st Century Eclipses

We were 30 miles north of Eclipseville, the Kentucky town of 33,000 that milked this for all it was worth. If I'd merely walked out to my back yard with a glass of sweet tea and watched for 30 minutes, I would have thought it was kind of cool. However, having driven two and a half hours to get there and then 4 hours to get home (scenic route to avoid the expressway) I'd say it was a bust.

A nearby rooster started crowing. The birds landed in the trees. The cattle started lowing in the field, but you would not say they got excited. As noted, animals, being smarter than humans, don't look at the sun too often. (It hurts their eyes.) wink

Lost in a regulatory fog
As I wasn't expecting much, I have to say I was quite impressed. We were on top of a mountain in the totality. During totality it got about standard twilight darkness and there was a sunset in every direction. The bees disappeared and birds started chirping like it was morning. Pictures from totality are so amazing they look fake.

Just back from my Total Eclipse cruise on the Oasis of the Seas. What an amazing experience it was to see the total eclipse. A few of us were invited to watch from the Helipad on the bow of the ship.

"Boneheads of the Day' was devoted to Eclipsers this morning. It seems there has been an up rise from folks following the directions heard over and over about not looking directly at the sun without eye protection. It seems many people applied SUNSCREEN to their EYEBALLS.

I knew the world was in trouble...but seriously? How could anyone think that was a good idea? crazy

Please tell me you're not serious, RR Joker! What's even more indicative of the world being nanometers from the edge of collapse is that there will be some lawyer who sues the sunscreen manufacturer for not printing on the label "Do not apply to eyes. This product does not provide eye protection." shocked

Sadly, it was a serious report. Somehow, I bet if you look at a sunscreen label...you will find something close to just that already!

I believe it was a serious report, but I also believe that it was fake news. Often anymore, legitimate news outlets get fooled into reporting on fake stuff. This sounds like one of those kinds of things where someone just didn't vet it enough before putting it on air.
