I am happy to hear that you enjoyed it. Another author I enjoy in a similar vein is Monica McInerney. Her characters are a little more quirky, but maybe that is what I like about them.

i'll be interested on your take of American Gods...while I know it is 10+ years old, it was being hyped so much because of the recent TV series version, I felt I needed to read it...I thought it was horrible...his writing style I didn't care for, and kind of reminded me of Cormac McCarthy, who I also tried to read and just couldn't...

Just finished Mayflower, but Nathaniel Philbrick. Historical non-fiction can be kind of dry, but Philbrick is a good story-teller. His books are well-researched, and reveal so much of history that we never learn about in school. We just went to a "meet the author (and buy his books)" this week, and I picked up a copy of Valiant Ambition, a retelling of the history of George Washington, Benedict Arnold and the outcome of the American Revolution. I've read about those characters from several perspectives, and I am immersed in the TV series "Turn" on Washington's Culpeper spy network, so I wanted to get Philbrick's take on the events of that era. It's clear from his description at the event that Arnold won't be the purely evil individual that we learned about in American History class.

Cormac McCarthy - The Road - Had to force myself to finish reading in the hopes of a decent ending, but no, it reminded me of all that wasteland world mess I had to read in college - hate it! I don't find American Gods to be that awful. With me, it's really a "I can take it or leave it" kind of book. I'm not really intrigued to learn the ending. I bought it at the airport to have something to read while waiting and others had recommended it. I've actually not been inspired to read it outside of the airport.

Started 'Everything Everything' for a local book club. It is YA, but also an interesting read. There are illustrations sprinkled throughout. I hear it has been made into a movie as well. To be honest I signed up for this as a way to get my adult daughter to get out and meet some other people who like to read. Fingers crossed.

Our Women's Executive book club at work just gave us 'No Excuses' by Gloria Feldt. Haven't delved into that one yet.

I picked up Murder Games by James Patterson for my trip and it's entertaining, which is a good thing.

I do generally find Mr. Patterson's books entertaining. I read the Alex Cross series and the Women's Murder Club series. I am curious about the new one he co-wrote with Bill Clinton. I may have to pre-order that one.

Just finished off the Lunar Chronicles. Very good series.

Tad Williams, The Witchwood Crown. A continuation in his Memory Sorrow & Thorn series, and very good. I'm hoping it's the start of another trilogy (only 50% through so I can't tell if he's going to wrap up in this book or not.)

Jeffrey archer - one of my all time favorites authors. You can't go wrong reading anything he's done.

Ooooh, it does look like the start of a new trilogy! Let's hope book #2 (aka #5?) isn't too far away.

I have read the whole Sue Grafton alphabet to date, and enjoyed them, but I am not gonna lie....I didn't think X was her best effort. Maybe it had too much build up, but it left me kind of flat.

Love Sue Grafton and can't wait for 'Y' is for Yesterday to come out next month; however I do agree with OldTyme about 'X'. Still looking forward to the new one, though.

The last couple have been kind of flat, I think. I'm kind of tired of Kinsey being stuck in the 80s.

Well, on the plus side there are only Y and Z left in the alphabet. I understand about the stuck in the 80s feeling, but it also fascinates me that she is able to write about the investigative work Kinsey does without having access to internet. I read an article once about how tough it is for her to stay in that head space when she lives in the modern day.

the decade that brought glam rock, hair bands, new wave, MTV, moonwalking, K-Cars, parachute pants, Members Only jackets, BK and Reebok white hi-tops...how could you ever tire of that?
