We were informed yesterday that all employees will be working on Friday. Branch staff that works on Saturday will receive an extra day off.

Marketing forwarded me a holiday closure sign and it appears we will be closed Friday November 10th. SWEET!

Make sure your regulator knows. It would be a no-no for a National Bank and you would have to check State law.

Just Saturday....as with any floating Federal holiday when it happens to fall on a Saturday.

Funny....I've been in banking for 40 years and still encounter people who are astounded that we do not get a day off, either Saturday or Monday, for Easter.

I also think that black Friday should be deemed a Federal holiday, as the bank is typically empty on that day.....and ALL the employees always put in for that Friday as a vacation day. A 4-day weekend would be nice once per year.

The bank I'm currently with DOES typically close on Friday after Turkey day. It is rather nice!

laugh! My luck, they would decide to no longer do that if that were a reason to come to work here. It's funny though. I typically do the holiday closing signs and it's like pulling TEETH to get them to tell me timely what our major holiday schedule will be. cry

meaning that a national bank can't observe a non-standard holiday closing?

No Veteran's Day Holiday in the week for us this year. Just our Saturday folks have a day off.

But, we do work the morning only on Black Friday, Christmas Eve and Good Friday. We close at noon on all those days. You are right, there is an initial rush in the lobby for my convenience stores and retailers for cash (or they get cash the day before Turkey day, but rarely) - and then nothing. We are across the street from the court house and a city office - and they are more or less closed that full week, although they are officially closed the Friday after as they trade the official federal holiday (Columbus Day) for Black Friday.

I think that here, no bank will do that unless ALL the banks agree to do it. Otherwise, the ones that stay open will use the fact that other banks close at noon against the other banks. My city sports a population of about 250,000 and I'm told we have the highest number of branch banks per capita in the state....not sure how many different banks own all those branches, but that would be a lot of banks agreeing to close early. LOL

Swiggles, you just need to advertise that you are closing to allow your employees time to spend with their family. IMO it sends a stronger message than we stay open and make our employees work on non-productive days.

quite the opposite, and more along the lines of Swiggles, our senior management prides itself on being "first opened/last closed" (not that senior management is actually around for either). We don't observe Columbus or President's day, and only observed Veterans day for the first time last year, and only MLK about 3-4 years ago; both because veterans and NAACP were planning a protest about us remaining open on those days. when a hurricane is coming or has passed, you can bet we will be open same day, if not next day.

We're closed Friday Nov. 10th in honor of Veterans Day. 90% of our branches are closed Saturdays anyway. I suppose the few that open a half-day on Saturdays might actually be getting Friday off, but then working the half-day Saturday on Veterans day itself. Or maybe they get a separate notification from the rest of the bank, but I doubt it. Our holiday schedule only mentions that Friday.

I'm surprised that so many of you seem to find out about your November 2017 holiday schedule as late as September 2017. Our schedule of holidays is published internally a year at a time (which also helps us figure out when we want to use vacation time). By late Dec. 2017, every employee of this bank will know whether we are off, closed, or closed a half-day for any given holiday in 2018. I always thought that was normal, at all banks. I've only worked at 4, but it's been the practice at all 4.

That kind of pride is both stupid and expensive. We had a branch, for a year or so, that tried being open 2 hours later than all the competitors. This was touted as being community-minded, innovative, etc. - you could see the pride gleaming in senior management's eyes, when they visited at 3pm. After about 430 or 500 PM, the branch would get between zero and 2 further deposit transactions in the additional hours it stayed open after 5, and nothing that wouldn't have had the same timing result as if it was dropped in a night-drop. The bank was paying those employees to work into the night for nothing, and incurring a considerable additional robbery risk, for nothing. How it can cause pride to have the local community observe an empty, lit-up building with no customers was beyond me.

I worked for a bank that purchased a very expensive interactive teller system..........where the customer goes to a machine similar to an ATM but talks real time with a real person on a screen. And the big super deal, management thought, was to have a teller available 24 hours a day. That idea was canned pretty quickly when they came to realize that no one comes to the bank in the middle of the night....wee hours of the morning. They were paying 1 or 2 employees to be there overnight, manning the system for all those expected customers who never came.
