our senior management prides itself on being "first opened/last closed" (not that senior management is actually around for either). That kind of pride is both stupid and expensive. We had a branch, for a year or so, that tried being open 2 hours later than all the competitors. This was touted as being community-minded, innovative, etc. - you could see the pride gleaming in senior management's eyes, when they visited at 3pm. After about 430 or 500 PM, the branch would get between zero and 2 further deposit transactions in the additional hours it stayed open after 5, and nothing that wouldn't have had the same timing result as if it was dropped in a night-drop. The bank was paying those employees to work into the night for nothing, and incurring a considerable additional robbery risk, for nothing. How it can cause pride to have the local community observe an empty, lit-up building with no customers was beyond me.
