We've long provided municipal and school checking accounts for free to our county officials. While some carry a large balance, we're certainly losing money by providing these services for free. Curious how others handle these accounts. Considering account analysis, allowing compensating balances to eliminate most charges, but they already freak out if some miscellaneous charge happens to post to their account. If we actually start charging, I don't think it will be pretty! Suggestions?

Maintaining public accounts, allowable fees and required interest payments is usually addressed in State or local law. There is no standard answer to your question.
