I'm once again really wanting to stop my nicotine habit (for me, snuff). Looking for any advice, particularly from those who have successfully stopped dipping snuff as to which strategy (cold turkey, patches, a gradual weaning process, etc.) worked best for you.

I have noticed a smell that only i can smell emitting (it seems to me) from my sinuses....a deep, earthy, sometimes dusty smell (but more than just dust...it's hard to quantify exactly)...that i feel certain is caused at least in part by my long-time snuff habit.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I want to add.....i labelled this 'nicotine addictions', but i feel like mine is more an addiction to snuff specifically......the ritual of it......the enjoyment i get after a meal......the particular taste it gives me.......i guess i'm saying i feel like my addiction is as much about ritual and mental habit as it is about a physical addiction to nicotine. I have been dipping for 36 years.....

Have you tried the alternative snuff - made from mint? It certainly won't replace the nicotine but it might help with the ritual and mental aspect in combination with a patch or some other substitute. Good luck to you!

Husband quit cold turkey. He used the shredded jerky in the can and butterscotch candy for the ritual. It has worked for him for 5 years so far.

Thanks Soonergal......anyone have any thoughts on whether a recent root canal (that seemed to be successful) could be contributing to the sinus problem? Upon thinking about it, the timing works........but i haven't been experiencing pain or anything in the crown....and i don't feel like any sort of smell is emanating directly from it.....the smell seems to be within my sinuses somewhere. (I have no history of sinusitis, FWIW.)

I would be suspect of the root canal especially if on the top of your mouth. Sometimes dentists mess up and miss a root.

Can you use Chantix for snuff? I quit smoking 1 1/2 years ago after 47 years using Chantix. Have not looked back.

Pulling people out of the ditc...
RJ - my dad was a 2-pack a day smoker for close to 30 years. he did a group hypnosis course and was supposed to follow up with an individual meeting 2 weeks after. He walked out of the group course and never smoked again, didn't even need the follow up. It has been close to 25 years he has been smoke free. Many insurance programs cover the cost for this.

I cut back quite a bit this weekend, both in the number and duration of my dips, but i'm going to try today to be totally dip-free. Thanks everyone.

I've never heard of dipping cold turkey. I imagine it would turn you off to both snuff and turkey sandwiches. Are we talking cold-cuts or like Thanksgiving leftovers?

That is an excellent point dipping cold turkey mid January when it was cooked In November would certainly be a deterrent.

I'm imagining dipping turkey jerky. I don't know about everywhere else but around here you can buy jerky ground up to snuff size pieces. Great way to get the kiddos used to dipping. It even comes in a round plastic container they can put in their back pockets. Really helpful for when you want your kids to develop an unhealthy habit but they're under the age of 18.

Good luck RHJ!!

I crack myself up! I'm actually laughing in my office, picturing someone with a wad of 2 month old turkey in their mouth. I imagine it would be quite the effective deterrent.

I agree:

The Cause and Treatment Of Smell Disorders

In addition to neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, other injuries and illnesses that cause smell disorders include dental problems, head and neck cancers, hormone alterations and nasal cavity growths. To discover the cause of the problem, the best course of action is to visit an ear, nose, throat and neck doctor with the ability to perform a complete diagnostic of your head.

Seriously, I hope you discover what may be causing your concern and that you can quit dipping successfully. If you haven't tried Starbucks gum, I am currently addicted to that. (It is mint, not coffee flavored.)
