Soaring over Georgia
Going to NH/ME in June. Spending 2 1/2 days in the NH mountains based in North Conway (including a niece's wedding just east in Brownfield, ME), then a couple of days along the ME/NH coast starting with an overnight in Portland and working our way south back to Boston. One morning in Foxboro (to see the Patriots Hall of Fame) and afternoon/evening in Boston before coming home.

I thought I was done with vacation for this year, but my daughter just called and thinks it would be a great idea for us to take her mom to Orlando for Mother's Day weekend to see Harry Potter at Universal. Fly on a Friday after work, and fly back late Sunday. She didn't bring up who is paying for this little trip.

Just came home from a stay in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Beautiful weather, fantastic time. A lot of places still under construction due to Hurricane Irma, but it's coming back. Came home to a blizzard. Not sure why I came home...oh yeah, my kids were home.

See the giant lobster at the Rain Barrel Sculpture Garden. It actually a quirky little collection of shops. It's better than it looks from the highway.

We missed the Rain Barrel. We stayed at Cheeca Lodge, so we did a lot of activities on site at the resort, kayaking, golf, etc. We did go to Robbie's and feed the Tarpon, that was interesting. Lorelei's had good food/drink and a great view of the sunset. The dolphin show at Theater of the Sea was fun. We did not drive down to Key West, so I don't have any info for you there. I have a fear of bridges (irrational, I know), so that 7 mile one would have killed me! smile

See the Turtle Hospital in Marathon.

Also, take a snorkel trip or glass bottom boat out of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park near Key Largo.

Pennekamp snorkel trip is awesome. The sand is as fine as talcum powder. You'l be washing it off for days.

Well, I'm with DoS, we don't have bridges like that up here in the frozen tundra. I'm happy you have no issues with it. Someday maybe I'll get there. smile

Hopefully going back to Japan in a 2-3 months. Was there for work and couldn't really explore that much due to business commitments. What I did see was beautiful and is driving me to go back again.

Headed to Orange Beach, AL for a week in August. Any recommendations for things to do other than bring a good book and beach chair?

I just got back from the Viking River Cruise - Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel. We also spent 2 extra days in Lucern, Switzerland. Amazing trip! Here's a short recap:

Viking is first class, but it's mostly an older crowd. My wife & I are 52. There was only 185 guests on the boat and only 4 other couples were our age or younger. Nothing wrong with that, but the entertainment and pace of tours was geared toward older people. I'm not certain if other Rhine River cruises are aimed at a younger crowd or not.

Switzerland is an amazing country. It's everything you've seen in pictures and better. I plan to be back!

We leave in two weeks for Viking's Amsterdam - Budapest cruise. We've scheduled to go on some of their events, but hope to do a bit of wandering around on our own too. Glad to hear you enjoyed it, and I'll let you know if there's a younger crowd on our trip (I'm guessing probably not!)

I look forward to hearing about your experience DEL. Viking treated us well from the moment we picked up our luggage at the Amsterdam airport to when we checked in at the Zurich airport. If there's something that isn't top notch, let them know and they'll fix it.

Well, I'm back and we had a great time! Also, our crowd did have some younger travelers, although the overall average was at or at least near retirement age. Due to lack of rain keeping water levels low, the boat couldn't go through some of the locks necessary, so at one point we have to transfer by bus to another boat, but the inconvenience was very minor. I must say Viking has thought through every step of the trip and there is nothing that they didn't handle in an incredibly organized fashion. Overall the trip was everything we had been looking for, although I did have two notes: 1) I had expected more independence in coming and going from the boat to shore. Sometimes that worked, but sometimes the boat had to be docked far enough away that we had to be bused, which cut down on our independence alittle. Also, sometimes the boats were docked several deep, so if you chose to stay on the boat, you still couldn't necessarily hang out on your own balcony and watch the world go by - you might instead be looking straight into a mirror-image cabin from the next boat! But those are not things that really changed most of our activities anyway, so we still got the trip we wanted.

Now don't get me started on the problems we had getting home once we reached the Budapest airport!
