I'm saddened to see Nebraska #19 on your list, but I may be happy with that at the end of year. Who knows this year: new coach, new offense.

I don't know that I'd have Iowa that high....I'm a Sooner fan first, but an Iowa fan second and I just don't see them repeating last year's performance this year. I hope I'm wrong.

I like your top two but would add that LSU, USC and OU could all be interchangeable in the top 3 spots.

I agree...also I think Auburn maybe a breakout team...they were so inconsistent last year and we know there is always a couple of Cinderella teams. I am hoping South Carolina will be better this year. I hate to see Lou Holtz go out
a loser. He has had such an outstanding career. We have to wait and see.

Sorry...I forgot to sign in...I reckon we will see on October 30th at Nebraska. I don't know if Missouri can repeat last year's big win. We will see!

hmmm.... 4 Big 10 teams in your top 15! Looks like the annual pre-season overrating of the Big 10 continues. It hurts me to say it (I'm a Michigan State grad & fan) but I like watching SEC football more than any other conference. Love those Sat night games on ESPN!

I think LSU is ranked about where they ought to be. Preseason rankings take into account losses in personnel as well as prior year's performance. Possibly they could be third or fourth, but they lost some key personnel from last year's team, including a very consistent QB in Mauck, some good receivers, and some good defensive linemen. I'm not saying that they don't have a chance to repeat, because I think that their chances are as good as any, and I fully expect to see them in the SEC title game in December, but they have some questions to answer after those personnel losses, just as UGA did in '03.

Carolina can be a great team, I think third in the East if they can beat Tennessee. Carolina's problem is their coaching, and their QB, in my opinion. I think there needs to be a change at the head coaching position and that they need to give another QB a chance.

LSU's coach also had a major pay increase this year, to over $2.35 million, making him the highest paid coach in college...ever. For a comparison, the Chancellor (president) of LSU makes only $450,000.

The preseason predictors have been burned by Iowa the last two years, picking them well down in the Big Ten and having them finish eighth in the country both years. Iowa's defense finished in the top ten in giving up the least points last year and should be better this year. Under Ferentz the offensive line has been dominant. I think this prediction is pretty accurate.

Jjohns: Last year the Big Ten was the only conference to finish with three teams in the top ten (Mich, Iowa and OSU)and the only conference with five teams in the top twenty (add Purdue and Minn.) so it isn't really annual. Actually, Michigan, Iowa and OSU have all finished in the top ten in each of the last two years.

Good points... but those teams each had 2 or 3 automatic wins against Illinois, Indiana and Penn St to pad their records, and they were 3-5 in bowl games. Just seems like overall they struggle when they match up against quality competition from other conferences. Maybe I'm still stuck on the days when U-M or OSU would dominate the conference every year and then get beat in the Rose Bowl!

Well, UM was a great team this year, but they faced a loaded USC team with a chip on it's shoulder. The only team that had a chance against USC in that frame of mind was probably LSU.

Speaking of the LSU head coach salary, that's not really big news. In most southern states, I'd wager that the head football coach makes more than even the governor (that's the joke, at least).

BUSH: It's going to be an interesting campaign. We have big differences of opinion. For example, we have a difference of opinion over the heart and soul of America. See, my opponents believe you can find the heart and soul of America in Hollywood. I think you can find it right here in Saginaw, Michigan. (Applause.)

AUDIENCE: USA! USA! USA!

THE PRESIDENT: That's not the only thing my opponent seems a little confused about. The other day in Ohio, he said that there's nothing better than Buckeye football, period.

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE PRESIDENT: Then he came to Michigan. First he told the crowd, "I go for the Buckeye football. That's where I'm coming from." No, I know, that's not what the Michigan folks were expecting to hear. (Laughter.) Then he remembered where he was and he called an audible. (Laughter.) He said that the University of Michigan was a powerhouse of a team. You see, my opponent is a Washington politician who's taken both sides of just about every issue, including Big Ten football. (Applause.)

I hate to see it, but if anyone was going to be wishy washy on football it would be John "avoid issues" Kerry.
