Ok, as a casual viewer of soccer, i have a few questions/observations for you rabid soccer fans:

1) At times, the throw-ins baffle me....possession of the ball seems to me of the utmost importance in soccer, but the risk level taken on some throw-ins (not necessarily near their scoring goal even) is astounding at times, and leads to quick turnovers, when a safer throw-in would not have. Additionally, is there some rule that the throw-in can't go straight to the ground/to someone's foot? They always seem to hit someone in the chest or be put in play for a header.

2) Long goalie goal kicks seem like a dumb strategy. I have almost never seen a big 50 yard goal kick turn into anything good for the team doing the kicking....they seem to normally turn the ball over to the other team. I mean, i get the concept if you're way down and need to hurry up and score, but a lot of these kicks don't fit that situation.

As a casual viewer myself, I'm wondering about the importance of possession at all. It seems the more important thing is how often the ball is on either side of the field. Possession bounces back and forth very quickly, but sometimes they have a hard time getting the ball out from in front of a goal.

Well, you can't score if you don't have the ball. smile

Well you obviously haven't seen Sportcenter's "Not Top 10." Own goals are a pretty common sight on their list.

Those don't usually occur (except for total stupidity) without the other team having the ball and being on the attack. As for the ones where the goalies just accidentally throw the ball into their own goal...yeah, i got nothing.

RJ - throw ins are tactical, depending how close to the opponents goal often dictates where the ball is thrown. you throw to a chest or foot as it can be controlled easily by the recipient, much more than if thrown to the ground. if you have a guy that can throw it 40-50 yards, then you do that and hope someone heads it into the goal, or at least creates a goal scoring opportunity.

as far as long keeper kicks, same thing. if you can flick head it on to a teammate running forward, it can lead to a goal, or at least an opportunity for one. Some teams are very successful using this as they are taller and can jump higher, shorter teams not so much.

Thanks Happy.....i finally got to watch a match yesterday (Denmark and Croatia)...i am recording the 2 matches happening today (so far, i have no idea how they turned out, which is how i want to keep it).

The match yesterday---the throw-ins were very sensible to my eyes. Their goal was to throw it in quick to an open teammate (or, if near the corner, Denmark liked the long throw-in turned into what amounted to a corner kick, which i totally get). Those made sense to me.

Another question....sometimes it seems like the goalie is hesitant (if he doesn't have to) to actually grab the ball, preferring to keep it on the ground as he contemplates what he's going to do with it, but of course, if an opposing player creeps close, then he grabs it. Can a goalie not grab the ball and then release it and kick it? Or once he puts his hands on it, is the kick out of the question then and he must then throw it to a teammate?

they delay picking it up because that allows more time to come off the clock. once they have it "in possession of their hands" they only have 5-6 seconds to release it from their hands, otherwise the other team is awarded an indirect free kick (truth be told i can't recall the last professional match where i have seen a kick awarded as keeper held the ball too long, rarely if ever is called). once released from their hands, it can't be picked back up until touched by an opponent, so they either have to punt, throw, or kick to get rid of it.

anyone who still thinks soccer is boring should go watch the 2nd half of the japan v belgium game...you'll never watch another NFL, NBA, or MLB game after that...

Belgium's first goal was amazing.....never seen a header quite like that, from that distance, with that trajectory, go in.

i think Vertongen was as surprised as everyone else, he didn't even celebrate. and the last 2 goals by the subs shows amazing coaching decisions.

It will turn you off to sports (even though soccer is not a sport) all together?

Brazil v Belgium will be very interesting. Brazil has looked much better than I thought they would. Worst thing about Brazil's 2018 team? No Hulk.

france v belgium just 35 minutes away...potential for best game of the cup so far...whoever wins this wins it all (in my humble opinion).

Haven't seen France at all yet in this World Cup........i'll be checking it out tonight. I have this odd feeling about Croatia beating England, though i'm sure they're the underdog. I'll go with Belgium vs. Croatia, with Belgium winning it all. Strictly a hunch-play.....
