We recently had an employee that served on a jury for a murder case and she was out for more than 3 weeks. Our policy for Jury Duty was very vague and did not lay out what we would pay for. We paid her for the whole time. We consulted with our HR company and they said that most of their clients pay 3-5 days. We wrote up a 5 day pay policy and took to our Board for approval and they did not like it. They think employees should be paid regardless of how many days.

Just curious what others pay for Jury Duty. Thanks.

OK
I'm curious as to the answer too, but my reaction is that i would not be very happy if i wasn't paid for performing a civic duty that i have no choice in.

We pay full time employees for the duration of their jury duty. Any days they have jury duty and are dismissed early enough to come back to the office for a 1/2 day they are to do so.

We are paid for the full duration of the trial also. I agree with raitchjay also.

one state over
we are paid for the entire time spent on jury duty, however, any money paid to the employee by the county for service needs to be turned over to the Bank.

Pay them for the duration. And let them keep whatever small pittance the court pays them as well.

Ditto Lestie. The pittance barely covers parking fees here. imo, no one should be penalized for doing a required civic duty.

Thank you everyone. Do you have this written as a policy, or is this just common practice?

Pulling people out of the ditc...
we pay employees, if they are released prior to lunch they are required to go to work that day...we are fairly lax on asking them to bring in a notice showing when they were released, we feel like we employ responsible people who will do the right thing. for those we feel may take advantage of it, we tell them ahead of time what is expected and to bring the release note showing time.

The Bank encourages all employees to be civic minded, therefore there is no loss of wages should an employee be required to serve on a Jury or as a Court Witness. Staff may keep any reimbursement they receive from Jury and Court Witness duty including meals, mileage or any other expenses.

Stated directly in the employee manual.

"Any employee required to appear in court for jury duty will continue to receive their pay and benefits during the time served on jury duty."

We also have written policies for depositions, subpoenas and witness testimony on behalf of the bank. I have never worked for a bank that would not pay their employees while serving jury duty.

Our employees are paid regular wage for jury service. If finished before 1PM, they are expected to return to work that day. They are allowed to keep any pay received from the court. The employee manual is explicit, so there are no misunderstandings.
