Yes, backpacking. I figure we'll do it in four days. That's what the interweb tells me most folks do, unless they are the nuts that run it in a day.

I am VERY envious of you. I am "older" now and simply can't do that kind of hiking/backpacking anymore. My husband and I once backpacked across the Grand Canyon (from south to north) and took 4 days to do it. It's just under 30 miles. But there are "nuts" as you put it, who walk/run it in one day...start out before daylight and finish it after dark. How does one enjoy the awesomeness of the trail doing it that way! It was one of the most amazing trips I have every undertook.....and I have taken some very amazing extended backpacking trips. Keep at it while you can!!

they aren't doing it in a day to view the awesomeness, but rather to challenge themselves physically and mentally.

Yes, I know. But it still seems like such a waste. Were I still physically capable of such a feat, I don't think I could do it in a place of awesome scenery. I wouldn't be able to keep from holding back/stopping to admire the awesomeness.

That was the last time we touched them until we got to Vancouver. They had planned activities in Fairbanks, then took Alaskan RR to Denali. Stayed overnight with many things to do, including being pulled by sled dogs (hitched to dune buggies) who keep training for the Ideriron race. Train to Anchorage/hotel. Coach to Seward where we got on the ship.

Glacier Bay and the captain maneuvered the ship to within 50 yards of a calving glacier. Next stop Haines/Skagway. Took a narrow gauge RR same route as the miners. Had lunch in the Red Onion - it is a period restaurant which during the 1890's served as a brothel. Next stop Juneau - took small boats out whale watching. Saw a mother and calf - momma was teaching calf to swim and come up for air. Also saw whales "bubble netting" - go down 100 meters and swim in a circle blowing bubbles out the blowhole. Ir captures the smaller fish in the middle. One at a time, the whales surface in the middle eating as many fish as possible on the way up. Ketchikan was next - more stuff to do. Cruised to Vancouver, disembarked stayed a few days and came home.

Cruise line excellent, so much to do at each stop. We did the land portion first so we would have a chance to relax before heading home. Loved it so much, wife wants to move to Alaska. Although they're there, you will NOT see the Northern Lights (too bright out). That's the same reason they save the fireworks from the 4th of July and fire them off New Years Eve.

Great info Rocky! Thanks. Can't wait to get planning!

While it's a few years away, my husband really wants to see the Northern Lights. I found an Alaskan tour that takes you up to the Arctic Circle (via bus and train) where the chances of seeing them are much greater.

We loved the catering on Holland America. Food on the Lido deck was the same as in the dining room (with the exception of Baked Alaskan served only in the dining room). One thing is what your likes and dislikes are when you get there. Tour cruise is one things - daily excursions are another. First and last cruises of the season are usually cheaper, but the weather has the potential of being more extreme.

Go on the cruise line website. Look at the itineraries and the excursions. Most sites have detailed activity listings, and include the optional excursions. While some may want to ride on a train, others might like salmon fishing, others whale watching.

If you are into horses or just pageantry, come to the World Equestrian Games at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) in Mill Springs, North Carolina next month. They are expecting about 500,000 visitors, so it's one of the largest sporting events in the world! I'm a volunteer at TIEC and would be pleased to escort you to your seat in U.S. Arena or take you for a ride around the grounds in a golf cart. grin

Rumbling Bald Resort (25 miles from the venue) has homes and condos available. You could stay with us, but we are booked with friends from Kentucky. grin

Looks like we're still not going. Most of the group are eventers and apparently there's a boycott of the eventing portion happening due to a certain controversial rider's involvement.

She has repeatedly been caught with blood in/on her horses' mouths.

No, the complaints against her are about harsh equipment and abusive riding.

I was just in Savannah, Tybee Island, Hilton Head, Charleston and Ile of Palms.
Loved all of it.
Each place has its own identity. I recommend guided tours in both Savannah and Charleston so you can learn about the history.
Tybee Island was cute, a true summer vacation spot.
And Hilton Head was very nice.
I had only been to Savannah once before (quick in and out when by brother was in the hospital) and had never been to South Carolina. I really enjoyed both areas, but loved South Carolina, I now understand why people go there every year.

Just one piece of advice. Bring bug spray!! I thought we were going to get eaten alive!!

They're called "no-see-ums" in Charleston - biting midges. Like gnats, only they bite. And mosquitoes. Lots of water, so lots of mosquitoes.

Four-Pass-Loop is on. If I don't check in by Tuesday, send a search party.
