We currently require a customer signature on stop payments. We are looking to change this and not require it. I am wondering what other banks are doing? Also, is there any liability to the bank if we do not obtain a signature?

We had this situation last week: Customer says they placed a stop payment on a check 1107. After pulling the form, the customer placed a stop payment on check 1117. Both checks were for the same amount. It was a good thing we had the customer's signature on the form.

I would recommend you review your state's UCC. Some states say the stop payment must be ratified which means verbal.

We do verbal stop payments for 14 days, after that, we need a written one.
