Has anyone started the conversion to CECL? I was looking for some webinars or literature that would be useful for small banks. I have done quite a reading on the subject, but having a difficult time understanding the concept.

Most state banking associations or accounting associations are putting on seminars. Also if you have a contact with your accounting firm ask them about it.

Several of the software providers have offered a variety of free and paid webinars.

And frankly, you're not alone in struggling with the concept. In the long game, there's really not a lot of benefit for anyone other than publicly traded organizations. Several of the prudential regulators are considering trying to get FASB to reconsider the rules for banks but that progress is unknown.

We sat through several seminars and ended up purchasing a 3rd party solution for data gathering and retention.

We have received alot of help/input from our accounting firm. They do our annual loan review. You may reach out to someone similar your bank works with.

Does anyone have a formula that can be used to determine the average life of loan for a given pool of loans?

Your Asset Liability Management reports should be able to provide this information.
