"break a leg"

how in any way can this be construed as a wish for good luck?

I think "break a leg" is old theater superstition - that wishing for something somehow jinxes it, so you wish for something that you don't actually want to have happen.

Can't help with that pudding thing!

And why does anything "take the cake?"

OK
I sort of get the pudding one more so than a lot of the other ones (i.e., the proof is in the final product...could be pudding or anything else).

I think that if the pudding failed to set properly it is proof that the ingredients were not correctly mixed.

The original saying was the proof of the pudding is in the eating. It's gotten shortened over the years but keeps its meaning.. the end result is how the process should be judged.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I don't know about you folks - but if I have cake, the only thing I want to do is eat it!
