Would you ever cash a check that was not signed by the maker?

Had a non-customer come into the branch today; brought in a check for $800.00 that was not signed.

After calling the customer and verifying the check number and amount, management made a decision to cash the check.

I personally would have never cashed it, but I guess that's just me.

What are your thoughts?

don't be surprised when it hits the customer account that he claims "I didn't do this" and you have to pay him back...since the check was not signed.

We would not have cashed it either.

A check is just a piece of paper. But, it contains authorization elements when the
Drawer -account holder
Provides written instructions and authorization to the drawee (bank) to take money from their account, and
Give it to the Payee (who gets the money)

Too many parts are missing to make it valid.
Other than the “check format” you have a piece of paper you will be taking money from an account without authorization and giving it away.

We would not have cashed it.
