We know that the IRS prefers that Sole Proprietorships use their social instead of a EIN. However, if we have a customer who requests that that the account be reported under the EIN, we would have the owner certify the EIN on the signature card, and allow this. We leave this up to the customer on whether they request to use their social or EIN and we don't get into the practice of getting too involved as to why.

Just curious to see if there are banks that "Require" the Sole Prop acct be reported under the social and don't even allow this? This account could be easily identified in our system both under the owner's social and the EIN for situations such as levies, garnishments, etc. Thought?

We don't permit our customers to tell the bank how to run its business so we only use the SSN for sole props.

We also only allow the use of a SSN. It's the easiest way for us to set the account up in our system so it is always consistent.
