All over the map.
No, but I saw a story about a young model, Petra something, who clung to a tree for 8 hours, after watching her photographer of 2 years be swept away. Horrible stuff.

So sad

Little dramatic don't you think?

Nature can be beautiful and deadly at the same time. You do what you can to protect yourself but sometimes it just doesn't matter.

How did the tsunami affect ships in the Indian Ocean? I'm sure there were Navy ships and freighters out there that would have been hit, too. I haven't heard or read any reports.

A tsunami in the open ocean would have almost no affect on ships. The wave is moving so fast, and the water is so deep, the ship probably would never know it was passed by it. When the wave becomes closer to shore, it slows down and is "pushed" upwards due to land.

Did anyone hear that the earth's axis was changed due to that earthquake? It also altered time by a 3 hundred millionth of a second. Not a lot but kind of scary considering earthquakes are not all that rare!

Death toll currently above 80,000. Some areas are burning the bodies on the beaches to limit disease from the rotting corpses.

From CBC News (Canada) about 2 hours ago:

An unofficial country-by-country breakdown of the death toll from the earthquake and resulting tsunamis in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, based on government and aid agency figures:

-Indonesia: 45,268
-Sri Lanka: 22,493
-India: 6,974
-Thailand: 1,829
-Somalia: 100
-Myanmar: 90
-Malaysia: 65
-Maldives: 69
-Tanzania: 10
-Seychelles: 3
-Bangladesh: 2
-Kenya: 1

It just defies comprehension.

That is correct Skunk Boy! I'm impressed, but I think your explanation is a bit vague. (My explanation may not be much clearer, but here goes) The shock wave caused by the earthquake does not become a physical surf wave until the shock wave encounters shallow water. The pressure builds in front of the shockwave and it builds into a physical surf wave as the water shallows.

Here is another question for any of you that may have some diving experience. It is reported that there were many dive boats off the coast. Assuming you were diving in 30-40 feet of water, and suddenly when the tsunami rolled in you found yourself in 60-70 feet of water, even for just a few seconds. What does that do to the diver? Pressure changes? Bends? Nothing? Submarines do not experience storms or storm turbulence because they are underwater. I'm really curious because nothing more was said about the divers on the news. Presumably they wend down with the Cracken.

An Alaskan from Cordova was killed. He was scuba diving.

State of confusion
We had a customer tell us that there was an aftershock this afternoon that was a 6 on the scale. I don't see this on the internet, has anyone got any info on this?

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
There is an article on MSNBC (I think) about a woman and her husband who were scuba diving. The visibility suddenly worsened and they felt they were being sucked down. The dive leader motioned for everyone to surface and they surfaced to debris and bodies. They had no idea what was happening while they were underwater.

I saw that on CNN's web site. Also, a story of a man reunited with his 18 month old son after a few days. A Thai princess allowed them to use her helicopter to get together. They posted the boys picture on a web site and the uncle recognized him. Unfortunately, the mother is still missing.

Here's another link to the updated list of earthquake activity. I'm amazed at the number of 5 and 6 magnitude quakes they have had in the region since the big one.

As is always the case, those who suffer the most are children. UNICEF is accepting contributions specifically for that region.

The devastation is incomprehensible....like something out of the 15th century...

CNN.com has a list of organizations that are accepting donations for the relief effort.

Sad thing, today they found the body of an Alaskan who was in his hut when the Tsunami hit. He had survived the 9.4 quake and Tsunami here in 1964 but didn't live through this one

Death toll in Indonesia alone is now at 80,000.

Can you imagine if one of your family members was killed there and ended up in a mass grave?

Actually, Dawnie, I've heard that the East Coast is vulnerable, too, if something were to happen in the Canary Islands. We watched something on this topic a few months ago on the Discovery Channel.

That is correct. Apparently there are some under sea volcanos off the coast of Africa and if they were to violently errupt it could cause an east coast tsunami...

Also this earthquake caused the plates under the sea to shift (I believe as much as 60 kilometers), forever changing the geography in the area. I heard that there are areas of previously dry land that have sunk below sea level now.

We lost miles of coast line when we had our big quake in 1964 (I wasn't around them). You can still see areas that were effected by the quake. Outside of Anchorage there is a large mud flat that dropped several feet. Another huge bank of land fell into the ocean. Funny thing is now, that's a large upper income census tract. They apparently don't know they're still in a quake zone Older people from Anchorage won't move there if they give the places away.
