You know you're from Jersey when . . .
You don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges."
You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags.
A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter.
You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
You've eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 A.M.
You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know the town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
You know what a "jug handle" is.
You know that WaWa is a convenience store.
You know that the state isn't all farmland.
You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey--there's the
shore--and you don't go "to the shore," you go "down the shore." And when you are there, you're not "at the shore"; you are "down the shore."
You know how to properly negotiate a circle.
You knew that the last sentence had to do with driving.
You know that this is the only "New" state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (try .. . . Mexico . . York . . Hampshire-- doesn't work, does it?).
You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
You consider putting mayo on a corned beef sandwich a sacrilege
You don't think "What exit?" is very funny.
You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton--that's for out-of-staters.
The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar.
You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
Every year you have at least one kid in your class named Tony.
You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening
credits.
You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall.
You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, and
people from Central Jersey go to Belmar, and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way.
You weren't raised in New Jersey--you were raised in either North
Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey.
You don't consider Newark or Camden to actually be part of the state.
You remember the stores Korvette's, Two Guys, Rickel's, Channel,
Bamberger's and Orbach's.
You also remember Palisades Amusement Park. (remember the salt water wave pool, how cool was that?)
You've had a boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries.
You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally . .
You've NEVER, NEVER pumped your own gas.

You got it, girl! And if you're from North Jersey, you may remember Alexander's, with the huge modern art hanging on the side of the building, and when the Garden State Plaza was an outdoor mall.

Also, the New Jersey Turnpike is the busiest road in the world, and, at the point where it runs between Newark Airport and Elizabeth Seaport, it is the widest road in the world: 4 sets of three lanes, with shoulders on both sides of each set.

New Jersey has the largest population of deer of any state in the US.

Only three countries in the world have a higher population density than New Jersey.

We actually have a state rock song: "Born to Run," by native son Bruce Springsteen.

Beefsteak dinners: anyone outside of North Jersey ever heard of one, much less attended one?

And if you're from Jersey, you never really leave it, no matter where you live.

New Jersey is the car theft capital of the world, with more cars stolen in Newark then any other city. Even the 2 largest cities, NYC and LA put together.

Absolutely! Santa and his sled (firetruck, actually) would create a traffic nightmare that Saturday morning.

Well, this has been a pleasant trip down memory lane. I lived in New Jersey during high school and college. I went to Toms River H.S. North and then to Trenton State College.(It's called the College of New Jersey now, but I can't get used to that.)

My dad was stationed at Lakehurst, and I remember being amazed by the huge dirigible hangar there. He was Army, though, not Navy.

I spent a good bit of time in Seaside Heights. Actually, one of my favorite things about the boardwalk is a beautiful, old-fashioned carousel they had there. I did my scuba checkout dives out of Point Pleasant. I remember WaWas and cheesesteak sandwiches and good Italian food! I definitely remember my father complaining about the car insurance rates. I had a lot of good times and met a lot of great folks while I was living in Jersey.

Rutt's Hut is still around, and it is in the same town in which I work. Callahan's, with their giant hot dogs, are still around, in multiple locations. Sadly, the art work hanging on Alexander's was torn down long ago. An IKEA store now stands on the site. The art work weighed several tons, and they couldn't find anyone who wanted it, so I think it was destroyed.

And speaking of hot dogs, Johnny & Hange's, long a staple on River Street in Paterson, is still around. They moved to Maple Avenue in Fair Lawn, raised their prices, and expanded their menu. But the dogs all the way are as good as ever, and will still give you a blessed case of agita. Ah, death by tube steak! Mmmmmm.

Certain highways and main arteries have traffic lights every so often. If they have a center divider or median, and no turning lane, in order to make a left turn, you have to go off the road on the right and circle around until you get to the traffic light from the crossing street. When the light changes, you proceed across the highway, and make the left. The term "jug handle" comes from the approximate shape of the exit ramp.
