For those in the potential path of hurricanes this year and the increased probability that more than one will indeed strike the Eastern US, what are you doing to prepare for it? I'm looking at purchasing some tarp ahead of time as well as the basics. Anything you'd suggest?

We always try to stock up on water and batteries. That seems to be one quickest items to go.

Batteries, water, battery operated lamps and radios, flashlights, candles, matches/lighters, non-perishable supply of food, pet food supplies, updated maps (in case of evacuation), list of hotels that accept pets, keep gas tank filled in car -the list goes on and on. I usually keep most of the stuff (except for food) in a hurricane box in a closet so that I don't have to worry about it. I also make sure I have my important papers up to date and available in case of evacuation.

If you want power of any sort, go and get a generator now - they were gone immediately after the hurricanes last year. I saw people lined up at the Home Depot at 5 AM (yes, I was one of them) waiting to see if any more came in.

And prescription meds - get a month's supply if you can and store them.

I try not to freak out until at least there is a storm heading our way. My mom on the other hand is at Walmart stocking up when a hurricane is near Africa

All are great ideas....

Please be Careful with the candles....most experts DO NOT recommend candles or any open fire unless it's outside after the storm.

The camping coffee pot that works without power!! A necessity of life - that and water - got beans that will be ground ahead of time.

Sounds like the gearing up some folks did for Y2K. Not a bad idea to have the basics always on hand.

Don't forget to have some cash on hand. I live in Punta Gorda and the ATM's were not working after Charley..

Way, way south.
Seriously, I don't know, we were hit pretty well last time and we were out of electricity for maybe 12 hours. It really wasn't anything more than an inconvience. A supply of water, a gas tank fill-up, a wind-up or battery powered radio, flashlights, and documents stored where they won't be destroyed are the main things I concentrated on. And The Dude is right, if it goes above a 3, time to scoot.
