I am going to the Bahamas (Nassau) next week. Any suggestions on what I just HAVE to do? I fully intend on doing a lot of nothing in the sun, but what else?

If it is as it was years ago when I last went, be ready to barter. There weren't fixed prices at shops or cabs. You tell them what you're willing to pay and they bump you up and you bump them down.
I remember the beach. The only work we did was flagging down the waiter for another libation.

Stay close to the hotel?
That's normally the only advise I hear about going to the Bahamas.

I agree with that. Watch out for people who will follow you around and ask to be your "tour guide".

Although I didn't attend, one of my nieces got married at Atlantis. The pictures were stunning!

If you can afford it, find a charter to take you to one or more of the smaller, less touristy islands. You will have a different experience, and unless things have changed over the last decade, you will get a feel for the local flavor. Once on a small island, rent a moped if you feel comfortable doing it. You will remember the visit to the Bahamas for years, you will remember your visit to the smaller islands for a lifetime.

Take a boat ride to the Blue Lagoon Island. It's less than 30 minutes away from Nassau. DH and I did and it was nice. There were dolphin rides, snorkeling and some secluded spots for napping and swimming. We did this as part of a cruise in 2003.
The markets are nice but be careful of the people waiting at the dock to take you to their shop. We were warned by our cruise director. Our ship docked in Nassau.

If your staying at Sandals, don't go to their private Island for dinner. If you do, wear pants. We came back with sand mites bites all over our legs! The only negative on the whole trip!

Long Island Long Island is the most scenic in The Bahamas. Atlantic rollers crash against the cliffs on the windward coast while shallow bays indent the western shore. At the northern tip of the island is Cape Santa Maria, where the western shore is one long white-sand beach shelving into turquoise waters.
And the best part is that Long Island is virtually untapped by tourism. Snorkelling is especially good at the reef gardens on the cape's southern end. The island's main base is Stella Maris, the setting for acclaimed scuba diving and sport fishing.

Way, way south.
|
If you go, I believe it is "conch" chowder and fritters. They are made out of the animals that live inside those large "conch" shells that are sort of spiral shaped.
Oh, and Key West is unofficially known as "The Conch Republic" as they try to secede every few years, lol.

I think the correct spelling is conch....we always called them conk fritters being from the south. They are like a crab cake or salmon patty only much better. The chowder taste kid of like clam chowder only much better...Give them a try and let us know when you get back! Have a GREAT time!
