I don't know of any regulation that limits the number of times a check can be presented, but the industry standard is two. Of course, one you hit the six month mark, return it stale dated instead of NSF.

Don' forget you have the option of using ACH. Re-presented check entries are described in Article Two Section 2.8 of the ACH Rules. It's page OR8. You can re-process a check twice by paper and once by ACH or once by paper and twice by ACH but the maximum is three times according to NACHA Rules.
