My almost 3 year old responded to me last night with a "yes ma'am". I didn't take offense to it. I thought that it was cute. I'm like bluebanker. I think it's respect. I'm only 24 though, so maybe I view it differently.

How about going to the zoo for 3 hours knocking you on your hind end. I had to go to bed early! How sad.

No one disagrees that it is respect. It is a matter of perception - the switch from being called Miss vs Ma'am by a person in a store or restaurant (versus my nieces and nephews in Alabama).

10. I thought the hobo was Freddie the Freeloader. He ended by saying "Good night and God bless".

When my brother and I were younger, my dad used to call people "Clem Kadiddlehopper". He'd call our friends by that name if he didn't know what there names where. We always that it was something funny that he made up. I didn't realize that "Clem Kadiddlehopper" was an actual character. Hearing this made me smile at some childhood memories that I have (sitting around the table at dinner time).

I always thought you called someone Miss because they wern't married and Mrs. or Mame when they were married. Age had nothing to do with it.

Actually today I was with a very attractive young married woman who performed a colon check. I just called her Doctor.

13. Don Maclean has never revealed the meaning behind the song. Popular consensus is that it is about Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, but there are also(seemingly) references to Bob Dylan, Elvis and The Rolling Stones.

10. Is actually, "Good night and MAY God Bless". A great child hood memory was watching Red Skelton with my siblings and parents. We always watched this show together as a family, and my grandparents never missed it either. The hobo was Freddie the Freeloader. Clem Kadiddlehopper (sp) was a character also whose signature move was to jump in the air and bicycle his feet while a cowbell sounded. Gertrude and Heathcliffe were two talking seagull characters that Skelton did. Can anyone remember other characters? I want to get the DVD set for my dad for fathers day.

Between the lines
Miss & Ma'am
Use Ma'am as in Yes Ma'am and No Ma'am --- Miss just doesn't sound right, "Yes Miss"?
Use Miss with a name -- always, always with a first name, only with the last name when they are single
And while we are at it, never, never, never use Mrs. with a first name. Miss Ann (doesn't matter if she is married or not); if she is married, Mrs. Robinson; Miss Robinson if not.

What was Flip Wilson's female character's name? That was my favorite character on the show and the pantomime was my favorite part of the show. I wish TV was still as innocent for my kids.

Geraldine

I say "Sir" or "Mam" to almost everyone. I wouldn't say "Miss" under any circumstance. I associate it with people summoning a server or a flight attendant.

Now if you're not sure, do you use Ms. (pronounced mizz)?
