dreaming of a warm beach......
When we first moved to the country, we didn't drain the tank for a number of years. We went from never draining to monthly draining after that.

We since replaced the old septic tank with a new one and had to put in a drain field. We have had the tank pumped every other year and have no problems. It was recommended by the excavater to not use powdered detergent. He said that was the number one build up and cause of tank replacement in his 20+ years of working with septic tanks.

I have had a septic tank system for 30 years. I was told to be sure to use Rid-X on a regular basis and it would help keep it working. I had no problem until a few years ago, when I started having to have it pumped every so often. It finally got to the point of pumping every month. I finally had a new septic system installed in May--an aerobic system.

Do you know how old your system is?

Just a short drive from Lake E...
Most septic systems use aerobic bacteria in order to work properly. A gallon of curdled milk or Rid X work wonders in keeping the septic system functioning properly. DO NOT USE ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP OF ANY KIND!! Any amount of this soap will hinder or stop the breakdown in the septic tank.

Depending on family size - drain about once every 3-5 years or so. Septic field should last around 50 years?

My parents had a septic tank and it would never fail that it would fill up when all the kids and their families would be home for a visit. No showers, no running the dishwasher, etc. until it could be pumped.

I think this happened every couple years or so.

As do I, adding that the size of the tank should also be taken into consideration when determining how often to have it pumped.

We had one when we lived in TX... I don't know what the previous owners did, but we had to have it pumped 4 times, and I only lived there 6 months...

MOML is an engineer so we have our 20+ year old septic tank pumped every 6-9 months. Depending on where you live, there are requirements for certifications that the septic is performing properly which must be done on a regular basis .

While it's the cheaper route, don't siphon it yourself.

Is that a suggestion, .... or are you quoting from experience?
