Do you offer classroom training for your front line staff? If so, how do you manage part-time employees?
We conduct full day classroom training for tellers(5 days) and bankers(7 days) and are seeing more and more part-time tellers. Most of these new employees are college students and training must be worked around their schedule. We've been managing this as best we can, but would like to have a better format for part-timers. Does anyone have any suggestions? OTJ is not preferred as it tends to be less thorough and branch personnel don't have the time.

Any suggestions you have are welcomed! Thanks for your help!

The only answer is: Automate and Delegate!

Classroom training is a thing of the past. You can develop Powerpoint Presentation for distribution, testing documentation to support the presentation. Use of an Intranet to train is an option, as will as a web site.

I prefer the classroom setting. We're still small enough to be able to provide this. Plus it gives the attendees the opportunity to ask questions during the presentation and have them answered.

I agree with Autumn, our part timers usually have to make some sort of arrangement or we just work around their schedules. We have a training staff of 3, so it usually does work out. In regards to hiring college or co-op students, we usually try to work it so their training happens over a break they may have, or before they go back to school.

Unless your part-timers have less/different responsiblities than your full-time staff, I think they should get the same training. A part time teller, for example, must be just as aware of BSA and CTRs, Reg CC, Reg D, Confidentiality and bank security as your full-timers. We perform classroom training for ALL new teller and platform employees, regardless of hours worked, - and we supplement thereafter with a combination of on-line training, in-person training, and articles and presentations.

Our part-time employees have the same responsibilities as those with full time status and, generally, receive the same training. At times, due to their schedule, we may have to cut something out, but regs are taught in training to everyone. We have almost 60 branches and begin a new training session every 2 weeks. We try to work around university and college schedules, but that doesn't always work out. Spring break tends to get first priorities! =)

I guess I'm looking for a magic solution that doesn't exist. We work around their schedules as best we can. This can have some impact on the other training sessions that we conduct, but we always manage.

Leslie - is your in-person trainin conducted at the branch or a training facility? Also, is your on-line training 'in house' or do you use a vendor?

We have made the decision not to hire part timers any longer, especially tellers. The training involved is too extensive and costly. Personally, I was against the decision since I couldn't get my teenage son on as a part-time teller. We do training in-house using Bankers Systems.

Christina,
Our initial Platform and Teller training is conducted in-house by our Training department at a training facility. Going forward, our CTR Specialist in Compliance often goes to each branch every year to conduct CTR/BSA training, so that we can address the concerns of the individual branches and so we can speak to any problems that appear to be specific to a particular location. Our on-line training is done through BTCC (Banker's Training and Consulting Co), but we (Compliance) do perform in-house training on new regulations (Privacy, Patriot)or changes in old ones.(HMDA, HOEPA). We post games and contests to our Intranet, and sometimes send out specialized training. We did a special Reg CC Test for our branches earlier this year, and gave a Pizza Party to the winning branch. We sometimes do hire outside consultants to train for us; in fact, Richard Insley has done some training for us as did Lucy Griffin. We find that a combination of learning methods keeps things from getting stale and boring.
