I'm about to become a grandfather in January to a baby girl. Her parents want to name her Isabel, and my wife and I are somewhat concerned. Isable is a nice name but, since her parents are Filipino, we concerned that she'll always be thought of as a Filipino-American because of her name. If she were named Janice or Mary, or Lauren I think she'd be viewed not so much as an Asian. Any thoughts?

Way, way south.

Are you serious? I know a lot of parents that have chosen Isabel as a name. I actually like Isabella and we are considering naming our future daughter that. I think it's a great name.

I think the way the person talks and acts is what will decide if they are thought of as American or Filipino-American, not their name. And if they are born and raised here they will likely be seen as just American.

Is Isabel a Filipino name? My mother-in-law and niece are both named Isabel and they are Hispanic. No one ever accused them of being Filipino, as far as I know. But I agree with Gato, if she is Filipino, what is wrong with people knowing that?

My non-filipino niece (we're WASPs) is named Isabelle. I just love it. Actually, the name Isabelle reminds me of Italian.

Trust me, the first thing people think of when they hear Isabel is NOT going to be Filipino. French or Italian, possibly. Actually, considering some of the names I hear lately, Isabel is a nice, lovely, safe name. I think it's a good choice.

I know a Scottish woman named Isabel. Also, and Italian one, Isabella.

I think Idabella is a very sweet name for a young girl that can be professional when she grows up. Just be glad they aren't naming her Apple or any other odd name that is coming out.

I really like the name Isabella. There was a little girl at my church and they call her bella for short. I don't think the name shows any kind of asian backround..

I have a niece named Isabelle and she goes by Belle. I think its a great name.
Seems to me, at least on BOL that it's getting to be a pretty common name.

I didn't like the nickname at first either, but now I think it is very cute.

By the same token... my other niece is named Elizabeth and she goes by Ellie. I didn't like it at first but now I can't imagine her as anything but Ellie. It just fits her.

Izzy? It sure is better than Princess or something ghetto like that. I've always liked the name Isabella

It's much better than some of the names out there. You know the ones.. Mercedes, Lexus, Volvo (Yes, I've met one), Shaniqua, and Jane.
Dare I ask why Jane?
