I don't really know. But I get them sometimes. I haven't decided what I think of them and what purpose they serve.

I prefer the American manicure. It is like the French, but it is more pink!

The thing I hate is that once you start polishing those toes you really have to keep up with it and MANY women do not. Nothing worse than chipped polish on the feet (or hands).

I never do my fingernails anymore for the same reason. I don't have the time or the energy to keep up with it. With the toenails I can just touch up a chip or two and not have to re-do the whole pedicure for 4-6 weeks.

I think most men prefer long, polished nails, but the upkeep must be very time consuming. Some women will take the time to keep their nails long and groomed, but it does not appear that many do. Are French manicures easier to upkeep?

I think that french manicures are supposed to look "natural", but they usually don't with the bright white tips. Not really easier to keep nice. The polish will still chip just like any other manicure. I have also given up polishing my nails. It always chips within a day. Why put in all that time when you just have to take off the polish in 2 days?

My friends mom was a flight attendant and she said they had to have their nail painted bright red all the time. The trick is to paint a clear coat on first so the nail doesn't absorb color. Helps with the yellowing.

All I know is my daughter is spending all of her allowance at the nail salon for what she calls a French manicure and a French pedicure. Every Saturday morning at 9:30. I think she probably has a regular reservation. Her nails look OK, but I think they'd look better with colored polish. If it costs the same and the maintenance is equal, then what is the benefit to French manicures? Why do most women like them better given the assumption that their husbands and boyfriends would prefer polished nails?

Personally, I have always like the French manicures because I'm not real big on dark/bright nail polish for my hands. If you have beautiful hands (I don't) then dark/bright polish is nice.

I have had a french manicure for over a year now. I don't bother with my toes because no one sees them - ever. I like the french manicure because it goes with everything. When I went through chemo I had to have colored polish on because my nails turned yellow and brown due to the chemicals. It was pretty nasty. But it grew out and now I'm back to "normal."
I am lucky to have a really good nail tech who is very careful about keeping my real nails healthy. So many of them don't care about damaging your nail bed or cuticles. My real nails have acrylic over them and are just as long and clean as the acrylic. But not dragon-lady length. I can't stand nails that are so long they start to curve around your fingers. Ew!
It's one of the few things I do for myself. It makes me feel pretty and I'm worth 20 bucks every two weeks.

A french manicure goes with everything. If you use color you have to change it more often to match your clothes.
