I need help! Does anyone have any ideas? I don't know what to get my dad for Christmas

He is an avid fisherman and he lives in Mexico. He is staying with me for Christmas so it can't be anything too big.

Any ideas?

Depending on what type of fishing he does, you could get him a reel. It would be small enough to fit into his suitcase, or a gift card for Bass Pro Shop, or Boaters World, or LL Bean, etc.

My dad is a big fisherman and he loves this store/catalog called Cabelas. You could try a GC. Easy to carry home.

Cabelas is here in MI, don't think it's nationwide but I hear that outdoorspeople LOVE it. People come from all over to visit it. Personally never been there, but hear that it is great.

My Dad treats that Cabelas in Michigan like mecca. He just loves it.

A Cabela's catalogue, with a gift certificate, will keep him busy dreaming for days. Otherwise, a new bass boat is always a good choice!

Not easy to store in the overhead compartment, but a great gift none the less

Cabela's is based out of Nebraska. They have a store in South Dakota, and a couple in Minnesota too. My husband spends way too much money there. We order from their catalog a lot too. Definitely a good fisherman gift.

If he's an avid and serious fisherman don't buy him fishing gear, unless there is place where he lives to exchange it. I am also an avid fisherman, but my tackle is "personal". A reel that feels good to you may not feel good to me or the balance in that rod that fees good to you may not feel right to me. I prefer a bait-caster over a spinning reel, he may be just the opposite.

If he travels a lot to fish - rod storage units are good.

A rod rack to organize his gear in the garage or den.

Nice rain gear.

A GPS unit - you can get decent ones through Bass Pro or Cabelas for less than $150.

If it was me I would prefer the GC, that way I can get the gear I want or need.

Dan, you would just love my father. He is exactly the same way. I would never dream of getting him equipment because I would never get it right. But get him a GC and he starts thinking of reasons to go to Michigan so he can browse the store. He uses the catalog, too, but if he can get to Michigan he's much happier in the store so he can touch everything.

There is either a Cabelas or a Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee, IL.

somewhere out there
My dad is a big hunter and fisherman. We never buy him anything other than GC. As Dan P said, what we think my be ok, to him is usually all wrong. I would hit up Bass Pro or Cabela's for a GC.
I think my dad would live in either of those stores. When he goes, it is an all day event.

Bass Pro just opened up a new 7 acre store in Clarksville, IN. About an hour and a half away - weekend trip already planned.

Hey Dan, there's a huge Bass Pro here in Cincinnati too. Make a road trip and visit them both

Thank you all for the ideas! When my Dad and I get together in Maryland we always go to the BassPro shop. He is like a little kid in there. The gift card suggestion is great!

Went there in Feb. To be honest I was disappointed in it, but to be fair the only other one I have visited is their corporate headquarters in Springfield, MO. You can literally get lost in that store.

If the Clarksville's store is a disappointment also our next trip will be to Springfield.
