Does anybody know if food stamps are considered cash when filling out a CTR. We have a depositer that deposits cash and food stamps which exceeds $10,000 when we add together the cash with the food stamps. Thanks!!

No way. Drug money and food stamps don't mix. You can trace back food stamps, but not cash, to the source so naturally they would not be included.

The instructions for completing the CTR define currency as coin and paper money of the United States or any other country, which is circulated and customarily used and accepted as money.

That would exclude food stamps in my opinion.

You accept food stamps for deposit? How does that work? I have never heard of that. Just remember the golden rule for Currency Transaction Reporting, it must be in cash. It is easy to begin to muddy the waters with different transactions, but always come back to the deposit, withdrawal, exchange or transfer of cash .

Food stamps are deposited by the markets that have accepted them for allowable purchases. The bank remits them to the Dept. of Agriculture (the issuer of food stamps).
