Is it just me, or is this the coolest thing on tv? (The Simpsons, Southpark and The Family Guy notwithstanding).

I don’t watch much tv if it’s not sports (or animated ). But this time of the year, the train wreck otherwise known as the first few episodes of American Idol is priceless.

I’ll lose interest as soon as it’s narrowed down to talented singers. But right now, it’s so damn funny.

Not that was funny! They just let him go and go.

Another one that comes to mind is the guy dressed up as the statue of liberty. He got two words out and then Simon booted him. Awesome!

I usually like this phase of the competition, but Simon has gotten too rude for me. There is no reason to lob personal insults at a 17 year old girl who is chasing a dream; even if that dream is impossible. He is a sad, sad little man.

Yeah he’s rude, but that’s just part of the appeal.

He could use more tact with some people, but those that are bad have to know they’re bad. One has to know their limitations.

I agree that Simon can be pretty caustic, but really, he's doing a lot of these singers a favor in the long run. They're surrounded with well-wishers and loved ones that just keep building their hopes up when they *cannot* sing. It's better, no matter how hurtful, to hear at 17 that you are not a good singer then to continue to chase this dream and before you know it, you're 35 and still living with your mom and dad waiting for that big break. And some of them won't get the message with a gentle criticism. Most of them don't get it even when Simon hammers them! Look at suntan girl. She was terrible! And yet, she was still certain she was fabulous even after Simon was terrible to her.

BTW, did anybody else think she looked a lot like Ashley Simpson?

Suzy-

Ashley Simpson! I was looking at her thinking she reminded me of someone, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

It was painful just to hear her talk.

It was part of the appeal, but either I am more sensitive to it this season or he is ruder than ever.

All the judges are missing is a gong behind them. This would make this phase of the competition even funnier (at least for me).

That chick was just plain weird. It was funny when they brought her mother in to the room. She definitely got her personality from her mother. I thought the daughter looked older than 16/17. That blew me away. All that suntanning I guess.

Anyone who thinks Simon's comments were good for that 17 year old girl doesn't remember what it is like to be a teenager. He did more than comment on her singing; he was personally insulting. It's just a bit much for me. I have no problem telling someone they can't sing, but asking whether they need a bigger stage and some of the other personal attacks that have nothing to do with singing were beyond the pale.

I liked him too, and he wasn't as gorky (yes, that is a word) as the red headed high school guy from last year who sang songs from that era.

The cop was embarassing. That fool was from WV. Way to go dork!
I really liked the girl who wouldn't answer Simons questions about her tan, the dude in the statue of liberty thing and of course the girl in the prom/ wedding dress thing real was cute. These auditons are great. You can't find that crap anywhere else.

The question of the night goes to Randy, to Zachary:

"Are you a girl?"

I didn't understand why a male was dressed like a female... or do males really wear that style of clothing?

I thought it was a girl all along- seriously that was the biggest surprise for me.

Zachary was a girl... just with an extra appendage. The shirt, the pants, the shoes, the tweezed eye brows... he was three steps away from being Liza Minnelli. His whole family needs therapy.

I loved Sun tan girl! We should have the US Department of Education hire her as a spokesperson. SAT & ACT scores will skyrocket!

This part of the show is the best, these initial tryouts are just hysterical.

Last night during the Denver part:
"I came a long way for this."
"Where did you come from?"
"Denver."

OMG, that was so funny...
