I bought an Ipod...

4gig Ipod nano black.

This thing is amazing, I put 13 cds on it last night, and it only took 650megs... It seems I am going to have a hard time filling this thing...

I've only used 5.5GB of my 20GB iPod and it has 1600 songs on it! Shuffle is an experience - you won't hear the same song for about 4-5 days!!

I LOVE my shuffle. However, I agree, it is hard to find a song on there even in normal play mode.

I saw that the 512meg shuffle was 69.99. I might have to get one of those soon for work outs...

I've got a 10GB iPod with about 1700 songs on it. Once I discovered shuffle, I was amazed at the sequences it would play. Recently, I've been listening by 'genre', which is also pretty interesting if you leave the genres the way the CD database fills it in. One of Rick Wakeman's solo albums was classifed as "Alternative/Punk", so listening by genre can yield some surprises.

You can also customize all that stuff too, the genre's and stuff like that. It's pretty cool.

I know. You're stuck with a fixed list of genre choices (you can't make up your own), though. I've edited artists and genre's to be more consistent. (For example, where 1 song shows as being by "Ian Astbury/The Cult", I edited it to be "The Cult" so it would show up if I played it by "Artist".)

Well watch out when you do. The Face Plate of the iPods scratches very easily. In fact there are entire web sites devoted to removing the scratches.

Ok, fill me in. I know what an Ipod is and what it's about. I have my entire cd collection(about 200) on my laptop. How would I move those to an Ipod? USB port? And how big an Ipod would I need and approximate cost? I need something mobile for my music.

I know about the suface being fragile. I still have the plastic cling protector on mine still. I will be getting something to better protect the shiny shiny surface...

Yeah I know the biggest complaint with the Ipod nano is that the screen scratches really bad and fast. I have a friend that is a manager for Wal-Mart and he gets them back all the time because of that.

Transfer is by FireWire, so it's faster than USB. You should get iTunes on your laptop, and let it organize your music files (iTunes is pretty nice as a desktop player in its own right).

I don't know a good way to translate # of albums into iPod size. Some sites estimate the number of songs. I have 1753 songs on a 10GB iPod and it is 2/3 full. I bought the 10GB cause it was the most storage for the amount of money I wanted to spend.

Well, all iPods come with USB cables, but you can buy a FireWire cable as an extra. The speed between FireWire and USB2.0 is not that great, so if your laptop has USB2.0 I would stick with that.

My first impressions with the iTunes software were very good, it organized my MP3s on my computer with no fuss what-so-ever.

Depending on the quality and size of your song files, you could do the 4gig all the way up to the 20gig(I think that is the next size up in the iPod video from the nano...)

I have the 6GB mini Ipod.

Does any one know if it's possible to move all the songs I've loaded into my iTunes library on my home computer to a new laptop?

Getting an Ipod is definitely on my "to do" list. Don't have a clue about them, though so I need to do my research.

When it comes to electronics, I tend to be one of "those" that always thinks..."if I just wait a little longer, they'll come out with something better". I just need to "do it"!

Congrats on yours, Maximus. Hope you enjoy it!

I have enjoyed mine very much already...

I just tore my dash apart in my car during lunch and installed the interface for my iPod, now I no longer need CDs in my car unless I want them...

Figure on 2500 songs per 10G. So a 30G would hold 7500 songs (says Apple) if the songs are 4:00 in length each.

The reason I bought an iPod was to make my music more portable. I have put my entire CD collection (about 200 CD's) on my iPod and have boxed up and stored away all of my CD's. That keeps them in good shape instead of being thrown all around my car and I always have the "CD" I want to listen to right there with me.
I love it.

The best way to do this would to have iTunes burn all your music to cd's and do the transfer that way...

Small update on mine...

273 songs, 21 cds, 1gig of hard drive used...

Of course, instead of 4gigs, mine only came with 3.7gigs usuable space, so 2.7gigs of space for music left.

I think this has been discussed once before but I just can’t find the thread.

From what I understand, the 30 and 60 gig ipods store the music on a hard drive and the nano uses a flash drive, correct?

I want one for working out and walking and in the car. Is one better than the other?

Flash drive would not be prone to skipping if jostled. That said, I've never had a problem with my 10Gb iPod while running.
