Here's the question:
I have emailed the NJDOBI 3 times and left 4 messages to no avail.
Maybe the always helpful Bankers Online can help:
Can Thrifts charge a cancellation fee on consumer loans if they
pay them off early? Is this permitted by NJ consumer lending laws?
Please advise. Thanks for your help.

If you are a federally regulated thrift, you may be permitted under federal law.

See 12 CFR 560.2(b)(5). The types of state laws preempted by the Home Owners Loan Act include loan related fees such as prepayment penalties.

Thanks Jack, I'll check it out. The state did get back to
me and told me to talk to bank counsel. Tell me, why do we
have a Dept of Banking in NJ???
